Valentine's Day Ideas for February 2020

I am sure you will not need reminding that February is the month of Valentine’s Day but how about a few tips about what to buy if you have decided to splurge on a gemstone for your loved one this year.

Let’s start with some top-class faceted gemstones shall we? The first choice is easy and I did think about leaving this one off the list because it is almost too obvious but it is such a perfect pick that I could not leave it out.

The Ruby, the iconic red gemstone representing love passion romance, you simply cannot go wrong with this beauty.

A great alternative would be a Pink Tourmaline, delicate, fun, romantic, everyone would love one of these gorgeous gemstones.

My third choice is a Rhodolite Garnet. Garnets come in all colors but this one is the stunning violet-red gemstone of passion and attraction, guaranteed to spice things up in a relationship.

The final two picks are no less beautiful but perhaps more spiritually appealing than the others.

Rose quartz is the ultimate gemstone of love, used for centuries in romantic rituals, inspiring flirtation and devotion, it can open the heart to new relationships or help heal a broken heart.

Finally Rhodochrosite will bring unconditional love and ensure you have found your soul mate. It will also motivate self-love which helps you both give and receive affection.

You will have noticed that I have chosen gemstones that are generally red or pink since this is the traditional color of Valentine’s Day, however not everyone loves red. How about a heart-shaped gemstone? That way you could select your loved one’s favorite gemstone in any color in the shape that will represent your everlasting desire.

The birthstone for February is the Amethyst, the purple gemstone that has a long and fabled history – it was once as valuable as rubies and emeralds. Amethyst come in every shape, size and cut, are nearly always crystal clear and the color is striking.

Has anybody seen Uncut Gems the movie? Anytime a movie features gemstones is always a priceless diamond being stolen by ridiculously cool and handsome thieves but this one is a bit different. I shall leave the film critics to say if it is good or not but any movie featuring a million dollar Black Opal from the Welo mines in Ethiopia cannot be all bad.

In case you are wondering most people who make a living from colored gemstones do not have gambling addictions, mistresses, and loan sharks chasing us around town – just some of us! We have a nice selection of Black Opals starting at much more reasonable prices.

We ship gemstones to all parts of the world through FedEx, DHL, registered mail and so on and while some are quicker than others in our experience they are all reliable. However I am not sure we would do what the Prime Minister of South Africa did when he sent the Great Star of Africa, a 530 carat diamond gift to King Edward VII. He arranged for a fake to be sent in a heavily guarded safe by steam boat and popped the real thing in a small box and sent it by post! It arrived quite safely.

The Great Star of Africa is dwarfed by the diamond shown off by Louis Vuitton in Paris this week – ‘Sewelo’ is a 1758 carat Botswanan find that is the size of a tennis ball! They plan to cut it down to ‘create several extremely high-end pieces’.

Speaking of diamonds, we have had some interesting new arrivals in our offices this week in the shape of some stunning yellow, golden and champagne tones, none are the size of tennis balls but they really are well worth checking out.
