Rutile Quartz

Rutile Quartz would be a fairly ordinary clear gemstone if it were not for the fascinating inclusions within the stone. These can be thick or thin, straight or curly, parallel or criss-crossed and resemble such things as hair cuttings, a handful of straw or some loose copper wiring.

Rutile Quartz Colors

The inclusions of Rutile Quartz can come in a wide range of colors from light yellows and fawny browns through rusty reds and silver grays all the way to black.

Rutile Quartz Species

As you will have guessed from the name, Rutile Quartz is a type of quartz - usually completely transparent - but with tiny fiber-like inclusions of titanium dioxide which make this gemstone so distinctive.

The arrangement, color and thickness of the inclusions have led to the use of a few trade names such as:

  • Venus Hair Stone
  • Angel Hair Quartz
  • Cupid's Darts
  • Sagenitic Quartz

What are the spiritual benefits of Rutile Quartz?

Rutile Quartz is a real double impact gemstone. Not only do you get the powerful healing clear quartz - known as the 'Master Healer' - but also the benefits of the titanium oxide inclusions which can act as an energy magnifier.

Some of its best known virtues include:

  • Relieves fears and phobias
  • Helps with feelings of loneliness
  • Promotes spiritual growth
  • Allows forgiveness

Rutile Quartz and the Chakras

The Chakras are various energy points located around the body which can influence our physical and emotional well-being. The Chakras have associated colors and a gemstone of a similar color can help unblock and realign the Chakra.

Rutile Quartz as a clear quartz can help ALL Chakras although the color of the inclusions can point it towards certain Chakras. For example, a Rutile Quartz with reddish or brownish inclusions will help unblock the Root Chakra while yellow inclusions will be better for the Solar Plexus Chakra.

Rutile Quartz Price

Rutile Quartz is not a very expensive gemstone and the best style, color and shape of the inclusions is more a matter of personal taste than an indication of price.

Certainly, very a transparent gemstone with brightly colored inclusions - say blonde or copper red - would probably demand a higher price per carat but the differences are minimal.

Carat Weight

Rutile Quartz gemstones can be found in impressive carat weights and sizes - 40 or 50 carats and even more are fairly common - which can provide a large window through which we can appreciate the intriguing inclusions.

Because the large sizes are quite easy to find, the price per carat does not rise for the bigger stones - perhaps even the opposite - and these stones are usually just a dollar or two per carat with just the exceptional examples reaching $15 per carat.

Treatments

Rutile Quartz is not treated as far as we know. Heat would spoil the rutile inclusions and dye would obscure the clear quartz 'window'.

Rutile Quartz History

Regular quartz has been used as a gemstone for decoration or spiritual reasons for thousands of years but Rutile Quartz has a much more recent history.

Any quartz gemstones with such obvious inclusions would typically be tossed aside by miners and sorters but as collectors began to search for interesting examples and imaginative jewelry designers saw the potential in Rutile Quartz, a market began to develop.

Where is Rutile Quartz found?

Rutile Quartz is mined in many parts of the world with the best gemstones coming from Australia, Brazil, India, Madagascar, Pakistan, Russia, Spain and the USA.

What jewelry is Rutile Quartz suitable for?

Rutile Quartz is rated at 7 on Mohs hardness scale meaning it is hard enough for all types of jewelry including daily wear items. The large gemstones with unique inclusions are especially suited to imaginative one-off items such as eye-catching pendants and brooches.

As it is such an affordable and durable gemstone, Rutile Quartz is a very popular choice for home made jewelry items, particularly beginners to the craft who appreciate the large sizes available.

Birthstones and Anniversaries

If you want a gem that you can trust to not be treated, or if it is it's disclosed this is the place! There's something for everybody. I really like knowing that the picture of the item is the one I'm buying, not a sample or stock photo. If you make jewelry, buy gems here! You can even buy a gem and have it set by a jeweler. Again, they have an amazing inventory, and prices are more than fair. You won't be disappointed! I just wish they sold uncut gems. Sometimes I just want a specimen in the crystal form. I'm surprised they had no quartz from Arkansas, but they have a great selection of anything I've ever looked for.

Size and Weight

Gems are always measured in Millimeter (mm)

Dimensions are given as;
length x width x depth,
except for round stones which are;
diameter x depth

Select gems by size, not by weight!
Gem varieties vary in density, so carat weight is not a good indication of size

Note: 1ct = 0.2g
