Hessonite is a major player in the wide and varied garnet family and it is the most historically important and spiritually powerful with its links to Vedic astrology where it is referred to as one of the nine perfect gemstones.
Hessonite Garnet’s nickname is the 'Cinnamon Stone' so you can guess the colors that are usually found in this gemstone - a range from honey-yellow to orange-brown and brown-red.
The color is caused by the presence of manganese during formation and the most desirable color is a bright golden orange although the lighter stones will show off more of a garnet's brilliance.

There are at least 20 species of garnet but only 5 that are really of any interest to the world of gemstones - almandine, pyrope, spessartite, grossular and andradite.
Hessonite Garnet is a type of grossular although like most garnets they are rarely pure in crystal and chemical structure and are composed of a number of different minerals.
Even within the grossular garnet species there are a wide variety of gemstones including:
Hessonite Garnets are the spiritual powerhouses of the garnet group. Ancient Vedic astrology says wearing this gemstone will bring success, good fortune and longevity.
Other attributes include:
In the nine gems of Navaratna - the perfect gemstones - Hessonite represents Rahu and wearing this gemstone will protect you from its negative effects.

The Chakras are energy points located in specific parts of the body which can influence us emotionally and physically.
Hessonite Garnets come in deep orange and browny orange tones so will resonate very well with the Root Chakra. Placed on the small of the back or nearby when meditating, a Hessonite Garnet can help unblock and realign the Root Chakra. An orange color stone could be more useful for the Sacral Chakra.

The price of a Hessonite Garnet is above all determined by its color - only then do we consider the clarity, cut and carat weight.
The ideal color for a Hessonite Garnet is a bright golden orange with a few honey tones thrown in for good measure. It is very rare to find a Hessonite without any internal flaws and in fact they can add to their charm with distinguishing curves and waves of alternating translucency.
Although Hessonite Garnets can be found in quite large carat weights they do get more and more expensive per carat as the size increases - assuming the color, clarity and cut remain similar in quality.
For such a fine gemstone they still represent good value.
A Hessonite Garnet of around 1 carat in weight will begin at about $10 per carat for an average stone but can rise to $50 per carat for a top quality gemstone.
However, a Hessonite Garnet of above 2 carats with great color and good clarity could easily reach $100 per carat.

Hessonite Garnets, like most other garnets, are not treated in any way to enhance their appearance other than the usual cutting and polishing.
Any treatments are clearly and fully disclosed on our product pages.
Hessonite Garnet has a long history of being used as a gemstone with the Ancient Greeks and Romans being particularly fond of using them to create cameos and intaglios.
In India, its history stretches back even further with Hessonite - known in Hindu as 'Gomedha' - being part of the myth of the great demon, Vala. This demon caused trouble for all the other gods and was finally caught and killed. Rather gruesomely his body was cut up and scattered across the ancient world. Hessonite Garnets were created from Vala's fingernails!
The best-known sources of Hessonite Garnet are Sri Lanka, Brazil, India, Canada, Madagascar, Myanmar (Burma), Tanzania and the US.
Hessonite Garnet gemstones are rated between 6.5 and 7.5 on Mohs hardness scale and are a tough enough to be used in all types of jewelry items.
With higher quality, more expensive Hessonite Garnets it might be a good idea to have protective settings for rings as they are more liable to be damaged.
Hessonite Garnet is the official birthstone of January and would make a great gift for anyone who has a birthday in that month.
Hessonite Garnet is the traditional gemstone to celebrate the 2nd wedding anniversary.

found what looks to be an incredible boulder opal on gemselect.com. Also got a bit carried away and bought more gems than anticipated. It's expensive to pay for these stones in this way, but the convenience makes it worthwhile.

Great selection, the user interface was somewhat irksome. If there was a way to filter out specific items (I.e. particular treatments to the gemstones), or would greatly improve the site. Otherwise, great!
