Peridots are one of the very few gemstones that are created deep below the earth's crust in the fiery mantle and brought to the surface by volcanic activity. In fact the only other one I can think of is the diamond.
Peridots are always green but this can range from a light lime or grass green with a hint of yellow all the way through deep olive greens to an almost brownish army green.
In addition to its peculiarity of being formed in the earth's mantle and not crust, peridot is also idiochromatic and not allochromatic like most gemstones. This means peridot is green because of its chemical composition and not because of the presence of impurities like most gemstones.

Peridots are actually a material called Olivine which is made up of two minerals – fayalite and forsterite. If the olivine has a good enough color, size and clarity to be a gemstone it becomes 'peridot'.
Peridot is a very reasonably priced gemstone. Although clarity, cut and carat size will play a part, the deciding factor in the value of a peridot gemstone is the color.
The most prized peridots are those with a pure, even green color across the stone with no underlying hints of yellow or brown.
Countries such as Myanmar and Pakistan have built up a reputation for producing these bright green gemstones in just the right color so gemstones from these sources can reach better prices.
The green color of peridots tends to look better with gemstones that are 3 to 5 carats in weight or even more. This size allows for a real depth of color to develop. As larger gemstones are that much rarer they can be a little more expensive per carat than smaller stones.
Peridots less than 2 carats in weight but with excellent color and clarity will range from $30 - $60 per carat while bigger gemstones may reach $80 per carat.

Peridots are not known to be enhanced in any way by treatments other than the usual cutting and polishing into gemstones.
The main sources of peridot these days are China, Pakistan, Myanmar, Tanzania and the USA.
Peridot is rated at 6.5 - 7 on Mohs hardness scale which allows them to be used for most jewelry items although we would not recommend them for daily wear pieces or engagement rings unless in protective settings.
Peridot is the one of the official birthstones for August.
Peridot is the traditional gift for the 16th wedding anniversary.

I love the variety of stones available, and especially that I'm not buying from a stock image -- the stone I see online is the actual one I'm getting.

Very easy to use and find what i was looking for for the holiday shopping, though the items descriptions at times felt vague espicially in regards to them being associated with zodiac signs. I understand that it's what some look for but for me it confused the expirence only slighty.

This is probably the fourth time I havebought gems at Gem Select, I have never been disappointed. I design a ring for myself, it is easier to buy the gems I want and take them to a jeweler. I am sure I will order gems again.

It was fairly easy to navigate after learning the website. Found what I wanted and it’s suppose to be 100% natural gemstones. I will test when they arrive and update my feedback
