Hematite is rather unusual - it really looks more like a piece of molded metal than a gemstone. It is largely made up of iron oxide so its metallic look should be expected as well as its weighty or heavy feel when you hold one in your hand.
Hematite starts out looking like a dull gray rock a bit like the ones you can see on the slate mountains in places like Wales or the Pacific Northwest but with a bit of polishing a shiny silver stone is revealed.
The metallic color can range from light gray to almost black and the better examples will have a mirror like finish. Despite its similarity in looks to metal, if you rub a piece of hematite onto glass or ceramic it will leave a red streak.

As we mentioned earlier, Hematite is an iron oxide with oxygen being the other main component and clay, chert, jasper and other minerals also often present.
The reddish streak is the most important giveaway when identifying hematite.
Other elements present with the gemstone or unusual formations in shape has led to a few distinctive varieties such as:
One variety sold around the world and known as Magnetic Hematite is NOT a type of hematite at all.
Hematite is most famous for its grounding abilities - letting you feel present in your body both in time and in person.
Its other virtues include:

The Chakra philosophy says that there are energy centers located around the body which can influence our physical and emotional well-being. Each Chakra has an associated color and a gemstone of a similar color can help unblock or realign a troubled Chakra.
In the case of Hematite, it is its base red color streak that provides the clue to its influence over the Root Chakra.

Hematite is an inexpensive gemstone that is readily available. The general preference is for a silvery color with a smooth mirror finish but some people prefer the almost black version - either way the prices are very similar and very reasonable.
Hematite tends to be quite large when compared to its more colorful and clear cousins and most gemstones are at least 5 carats in weight and move quickly up to 20 and 30 carats and more.
No matter the size, hematite gemstones will cost about a dollar or two per carat with only the finest examples reaching $3 per carat.

Most Hematite gemstones are just cut and polished into the neat cabochons you see for sale on our website - no heating or dyeing required.
Be a little bit wary of Rainbow Hematite as this is often fake and remember Magnetic Hematite is not real either.
Pieces of hematite have been used by mankind for perhaps 200,000 years but usually ground up as a pigment or as a form of red chalk.
As a gemstone, hematite was carved into amulets or seals by Ancient Sumerians in Mesopotamia around 3000 years ago and Ancient Greeks referred to it as Blood Stone because of its red color when ground up.
The main sources of Hematite in gemstone form are Brazil, South Africa, Morocco and the USA.
Hematite is rated at 5.5 - 6.5 on Mohs hardness scale which makes it durable enough for most jewelry items although rings and bracelets may need protective settings and bit more care when being worn.
The large sizes and heavy feel of Hematite lends itself to being used as an eye-catching pendant, with its silvery shine and unusual luster making it a popular choice for contemporary or bohemian styles.

It's important to understand what you are buying. Gem stones all vary significantly and you need to adjust your selection based on purpose, cost, expected out come.In my case I was selecting and very attractive heart shaped stone which once set in a pendent would fall in a specific cost range yet present an attractive picture of luxury without extreme risk e.g loss.
