Tanzanite

Tanzanite, the startling blue gemstone with flashes of red and violet, has been described by the president of Tiffany’s as 'the most beautiful gemstone discovered in 2000 years'.

Unlike almost every other regularly used gemstone, Tanzanite was only found as recently as the 1960s and even now is only mined in a tiny corner of the east African country of Tanzania.

Tanzanite Colors

Tanzanite, it could be argued, has the most beautiful blue color in the world of gemstones - even the mighty sapphire can look a bit pale next to a tanzanite.

The blue can range from a light sky blue all the way to a deep midnight blue and the appearance can be enhanced by intense flares of red and violet as the gemstones move this way and that.

Tanzanite Species

Tanzanite is actually a mineral called zoisite but when Tiffany's decided to promote this new-found gemstone, they thought the name was very unappealing and rechristened it Tanzanite after the country it came from.

What are the spiritual benefits of Tanzanite?

As this gemstone was only discovered relatively recently it has not built up any sort of reputation for its spiritual powers although local Maasai tribes people consider it a good luck symbol.

Some of its virtues are:

  • Boosting Psychic Abilities
  • Clairvoyance and Intuition
  • Creativity

Tanzanite and the Chakras

Tanzanite has a color range that covers the three upper Chakras which are the most spiritual of the seven - Throat, Third Eye and Crown. They deal with the connection between the physical and metaphysical worlds as well as communication and expression.

Tanzanite Price

If you have done any research into the pricing of gemstones you are sure to have read the old saying 'color is king'. Tanzanite is no different and the only color for Tanzanite is blue - the bluer the better!

Deeply saturated blue colors are more valued than lighter stones. They are more plentiful and therefore a bit less expensive. These delicate subtle pastel colors can be very appealing.

As a tanzanite gemstone is turned from one angle to another it can show different colors - other shades of blue, reds, violets and even greens can appear. This is due to a phenomenon called pleochroism and a skilled cutter will ensure that the most exciting colors flash when viewing the gemstone from the top.

Carat Weight

Tanzanite is available in a wide range of carat weights. All sizes can be beautiful but it often takes a gemstone of 5 carats and above to show real depth and saturation of color.

If we take a medium color tanzanite as an example, smaller 1 - 2 carat stones will cost between $110 and $350 per carat but gemstones over 5 carats could rise to $200 - $600 per carat depending on color, clarity and cut.

Treatments

It is usually assumed that all tanzanite gemstones are heat treated. When it emerges from the ground it is described by the miners as 'diesel' colored because it looks like the fuel in their trucks!

However half an hour in an oven at 600 degrees can produce a world class beauty ready for cutting.

Any treatment our gemstones receive is clearly stated on our product pages and please be very wary of any tanzanite gemstones labeled 'untreated'.

Tanzanite History

The history of tanzanite is split into two very different tales.

Its geological history begins millions of years ago when crystals began to form in the volcanic inferno that also helped create the majestic Mt Kilimajaro.

Its discovery as a gemstone began more recently, in 1967, when, according to legend, herdsmen tending their cattle in the hills of Tanzania not long after a bush fire noticed that the normally brown rocks that littered the ground now seemed to have a blue glow.

Where are Tanzanite found?

Tanzanite can be found in one place only in nature - a small strip of land just 4km long in the Mererani Hills in the shadows of Mt Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania.

What jewelry is Tanzanite suitable for?

Tanzanite is rated at 6.5 to 7 on Mohs hardness scale. This makes it tough enough for most jewelry items. We would not recommend it for daily wear as it could get scratched and scuffed although pendants and earrings should not be a problem.

Birthstones and Anniversaries

Tanzanite is an official birthstone for December so can make a great gift for someone who has a birthday in that month.

Tanzanite is the recognized gemstone to celebrate the 24th wedding anniversary.

I have purchased several times from GemSelect and am always pleased with the stones. The information on the site about each stone is thorough. I don't have to worry about fake stones from them and the prices are quite reasonable. I love the new cards provided for each stone. I would highly recommend them.

Everything is great. If you could add one thing to your site, I would suggest pendant findings, especially for the larger sized stones.

Easiest website to find what I'm looking for as a starter gem collector. Many years in precious metals I decided to expand my interest. This website makes it easy to search exactly what I'm looking for with great description of what I'm purchasing.

If you want a gem that you can trust to not be treated, or if it is it's disclosed this is the place! There's something for everybody. I really like knowing that the picture of the item is the one I'm buying, not a sample or stock photo. If you make jewelry, buy gems here! You can even buy a gem and have it set by a jeweler. Again, they have an amazing inventory, and prices are more than fair. You won't be disappointed! I just wish they sold uncut gems. Sometimes I just want a specimen in the crystal form. I'm surprised they had no quartz from Arkansas, but they have a great selection of anything I've ever looked for.

Size and Weight

Gems are always measured in Millimeter (mm)

Dimensions are given as;
length x width x depth,
except for round stones which are;
diameter x depth

Select gems by size, not by weight!
Gem varieties vary in density, so carat weight is not a good indication of size

Note: 1ct = 0.2g
