Tanzanite, the startling blue gemstone with flashes of red and violet, has been described by the president of Tiffany’s as 'the most beautiful gemstone discovered in 2000 years'.
Unlike almost every other regularly used gemstone, Tanzanite was only found as recently as the 1960s and even now is only mined in a tiny corner of the east African country of Tanzania.
Tanzanite, it could be argued, has the most beautiful blue color in the world of gemstones - even the mighty sapphire can look a bit pale next to a tanzanite.
The blue can range from a light sky blue all the way to a deep midnight blue and the appearance can be enhanced by intense flares of red and violet as the gemstones move this way and that.

Tanzanite is actually a mineral called zoisite but when Tiffany's decided to promote this new-found gemstone, they thought the name was very unappealing and rechristened it Tanzanite after the country it came from.
If you have done any research into the pricing of gemstones you are sure to have read the old saying 'color is king'. Tanzanite is no different and the only color for Tanzanite is blue - the bluer the better!
Deeply saturated blue colors are more valued than lighter stones. They are more plentiful and therefore a bit less expensive. These delicate subtle pastel colors can be very appealing.
As a tanzanite gemstone is turned from one angle to another it can show different colors - other shades of blue, reds, violets and even greens can appear. This is due to a phenomenon called pleochroism and a skilled cutter will ensure that the most exciting colors flash when viewing the gemstone from the top.
Tanzanite is available in a wide range of carat weights. All sizes can be beautiful but it often takes a gemstone of 5 carats and above to show real depth and saturation of color.
If we take a medium color tanzanite as an example, smaller 1 - 2 carat stones will cost between $110 and $350 per carat but gemstones over 5 carats could rise to $200 - $600 per carat depending on color, clarity and cut.
It is usually assumed that all tanzanite gemstones are heat treated. When it emerges from the ground it is described by the miners as 'diesel' colored because it looks like the fuel in their trucks!
However half an hour in an oven at 600 degrees can produce a world class beauty ready for cutting.
Any treatment our gemstones receive is clearly stated on our product pages and please be very wary of any tanzanite gemstones labeled 'untreated'.
Tanzanite can be found in one place only in nature - a small strip of land just 4km long in the Mererani Hills in the shadows of Mt Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania.
Tanzanite is rated at 6.5 to 7 on Mohs hardness scale. This makes it tough enough for most jewelry items. We would not recommend it for daily wear as it could get scratched and scuffed although pendants and earrings should not be a problem.
Tanzanite is an official birthstone for December so can make a great gift for someone who has a birthday in that month.
Tanzanite is the recognized gemstone to celebrate the 24th wedding anniversary.
