The garnet family features a number of very fine gemstones including the Rhodolite Garnet which is a very versatile stone with the colors of a ruby at a fraction of the price.
Rhodolite Garnets are described as raspberry-red or purplish-red and their name comes from the Greek 'rhodon' meaning rose which hints at the pinkish tints that can also be found in this lovely gemstone.

The garnet family is made up of a wide array of gemstones all linked by a similar crystal structure and mineral composition. Two of the reddish varieties, pyrope and almandine, combine to produce Rhodolite Garnets.
All colored gemstones, with a few exceptions, are priced primarily on their color. Only when we have the color in order will we consider the clarity, cut and size.
For Rhodolite Garnets the most valuable color will be a strong pinkish red color although red colors leaning toward purple are also much sought after. Look out for intensely saturated gemstones without any brown tones to get top value.
Finding very large Rhodolite Garnets with excellent color and good clarity is not easy so as the stones get bigger the price per carat rises quickly.
A fine quality Rhodolite under a carat will reach around $20 - $50 per carat while a gemstone of high quality which weighs well over 2 carats could reach $200 per carat.

Rhodolite Garnet deposits occur in Brazil, Burma (Myanmar), Madagascar, Mozambique, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Tanzania and the USA.
Rhodolite Garnets are rated between 6.5 and 7.5 on Mohs hardness scale and can be used in all types of jewelry items including daily wear items.
Larger, more expensive gemstones, might want to have protective settings in rings as they are more likely to be bumped or knocked.
Rhodolite Garnet is an official birthstone for the month of January and would make a great gift for anyone who has a birthday then.
Rhodolite Garnet is a traditional gemstone to help celebrate the 2nd wedding anniversary.
