Sphene is a very rare brilliant gemstone with a high luster, also known as "titanite" due to its titanium content. The name "sphene" comes from the Greek word, "sphen", meaning "wedge", which alludes to the formation of its crystals. Due to its high dispersion, when brilliant-cut, sphene can exhibit a fire similar to that of diamond.

Where is Yellow Sphene found?

Yellow sphene deposits are found in Brazil, Burma (Myanmar), India, Kenya, Madagascar, Mexico, Austria, Sri Lanka (Ceylon) and the USA.

Is Yellow Sphene treated?

Yellow Sphene is not generally treated or enhanced, though the color can be changed to red or orange by heating.

Yellow Sphene Cut and Shape

Yellow Sphene is cut in a variety of faceted shapes that show off its high dispersion and adamantine luster. Yellow Sphene can be seen in shapes such as octagons, trillions, squares, rounds and fancier shapes, such as ovals, pears and cushions. Translucent to opaque stones are often cut en cabochon. Yellow Sphene can present a challenge to lapidarists, due to its brittle tenacity and softness, but is worth the effort, since when faceted and polished it yields stunning results.

Prices for Yellow Sphene vary depending on weight and quality of each gemstone. Smaller facet cut gems less than 1 carat typically range in price from $40 to $200 per carat, while gems over 1 carat typically costs from $100 per carat up to $500 per carat.

Cabochon cut gems are more affordable and smaller gems less than 1 carat usually cost $5 to $20 per carat, with larger gems commanding a price of $30 to $50 per carat.

What jewelry is Yellow Sphene suitable for?

Yellow Sphene's high refractive index, dispersion and luster make it a stunning gemstone. However, it is a rare gemstone that is not often seen in jewelry. Moreover, due to yellow sphene's lack of hardness, it is not recommended to be worn daily in rings or jewelry that is likely to be exposed to general wear and tear. Even so, due to its remarkable brilliance, well-cut yellow sphene gemstones do make for stunning rings, as long as its occasional-wearing and care is taken to protect the stone. After working with and polishing low-grade, rough fire-agate, only to be disappointed, this shop was nirvana. The costs of some gems might seem high, but I have easily spent the same amount rough polishing lousy material only to get a few hints of fire. If you want Fire-agates, BUY the agates you want. These are excellent specimens and are worth considering.
