Agate is chalcedony that forms in concentric layers in an amazing array of colors and textures. Agate varies in clarity from opaque to translucent or transparent. Agate quartz is one of the most popular jewelry gemstones and is worn in rings, pendants, earrings and other jewelry and accessories.
Chalcedony, or calcedony, is a fine-grained variety of the silica mineral quartz. It has a waxy luster and appears in a great variety of colors - usually blue-white, buff, light tan, gray, yellow or brown. Named after the ancient seaport of Chalcedon (Kadikoy, Turkey), chalcedony use dates back to 500 BC. Common forms of chalcedony include agate, bloodstone, jasper and onyx.
Dendritic agate and dendritic chalcedony are whitish-gray, colorless or neutral colored quartz gemstones with fern-like inclusions known as dendrites. They are usually cut en cabochon to show off their beautiful and unique inclusions. The inclusions look like tiny pieces of plant material, but they are actually composed of iron or manganese. Dendritic agate and dendritic chalcedony deposits are found in Brazil, India, Madagascar, the USA, Mexico and Kazakhstan.
