April Birthstones

What is the April Birthstone?

The April Birthstone is Diamond.

Diamonds are probably the most famous gemstones in the world, acclaimed for their exceptional hardness as well as amazing brilliance and remarkable fire.

The name diamond came from a Greek word meaning invincible and have been sought after and fought over for millennia although 20th century marketing has made them more popular than ever.

The April Birthstone - Diamond Colors

When you imagine a sparkling diamond, it is most likely white or colorless but in fact the most common diamonds have a yellow or brown color - often called champagne or cognac diamonds.

The official color grading system for diamonds begins at D for completely colorless and ends at Z which is a light yellow.

Other diamond colors such as pink, red, orange, green or blue - known as fancy diamonds - are another matter altogether. Naturally colored fancy diamonds are extremely rare and can be $100,000s per carat with some even reaching a million dollars or more per carat.

The April Birthstone Price - How expensive is Diamond?

The color grading system for colorless diamonds is the 'go to' guide for prices. Assuming the size, cut and clarity are of a similar standard a diamond with a grade of D, E or F will be worth considerably more than a gemstone with an M or N grading.

There are too many variables to be very accurate with prices but a 1 carat D color diamond could be around $5000 while the same size K color diamond could be $2000 - quite a difference.

Unless you are an expert it can be quite difficult to tell the difference between say a G grade Diamond and a J grade Diamond but the saving in costs can be huge.

In between the colorless diamonds and fancy diamonds we have what are commonly referred to as champagne or cognac diamonds. These can be gorgeous diamonds with deep orange brown or light yellow colors but can cost quite a bit less than a similar sized colorless version.

  • Restores Confidence

The April Birthstone - Diamond and the Chakras

Colorless Diamonds are linked to the Crown Chakra but as they are 'white', they contain all the colors of the rainbow so, in theory, they can help all Chakras.

Brown diamonds are more tuned to the Root Chakra and yellow diamonds will help with the Solar Plexus Chakra.

The April Birthstone - Diamond Species

Diamonds are the hardest natural mineral on earth, formed deep below the earth's crust and brought to the surface through volcanic activity.

Diamonds are carbon - although they do not come from coal - that has been formed under intense pressure and high temperatures. This process creates a crystal structure that is incredibly strong.

Graphite is also almost entirely carbon, too but its crystal structure means it is soft enough to write with while diamonds will scratch every substance on earth.

The April Birthstone - Diamond Treatments

Most colorless and champagne or cognac diamonds are not treated in any way other than cutting and polishing.

There are a couple of treatments that can occur with diamonds. HPHT (high pressure high temperature) treatment can alter the color or remove color entirely. It is an expensive process so only high price, high quality diamonds are treated in this way. It is quite difficult to detect so a report from a well established laboratory is a must.

Irradiation, laser drilling, annealing and coating treatments of diamonds also exist but are much more easily spotted.

The April Birthstone - Diamond History

For thousands of years, the only source of diamonds in the world was India, especially the legendary mines of Golconda. This area has a fascinating history and produced exceptional quality diamonds known for their great clarity.

The diamonds that flowed from this region include some of the most famous names in gemstones including:

  • Koh-i-Noor
  • The Hope Diamond
  • Daria-i-Noor
  • The Great Mogul Diamond
  • The Orlov Diamond
  • Akbar Shah

Later discoveries in Brazil, then South Africa, replaced the supplies that had been depleted from the ancient Indian mines.

The April Birthstone - Where are Diamonds found?

India was once the only source of diamonds for the entire world before discoveries in Brazil and South Africa. Nowadays, diamonds are found throughout the world with Russia, Canada, Botswana and Namibia among the biggest players.

The April Birthstone - What jewelry is Diamond suitable for?

As the most famous name in jewelry, diamonds are ideal for all types including rings, necklaces, earrings and so on. They have the highest possible rating of 10 on Mohs hardness scale so can be used for daily wear items such as engagement rings.

Diamonds are available in singles as well as matching pairs and lots, so side stones, accent stones, pavé stones are always an option as are any multi-stone jewelry designs.

In addition to being the April birthstone, Diamonds are also the traditional gemstones to celebrate the 10th, 60th and 75th wedding anniversaries.

Although they are not official birthstones,in old Arabic, Roman, Hebrew, Russian and Italian calendars, sapphire was the original April birthstone so can be considered an alternative. Similarly, the Tibetan calendar, sometimes known as the "mystical birthstone calendar", listed opal as the April birthstone.

I like to use GemSelect for finding calibrated sizes of gemstones. I purchased sapphires a few years ago and found the quality to be outstanding so I went ahead and purchased some more today (different) and some really unique moonstone. I'm opening a jewelry busy soon and so accurate gemstone sizes, quality, and reliability as a supplier is really important to me. Gemselect seems to fill all those requirements.
