Opal in Matrix
Opal in Matrix, or "Matrix Opal" is similar to boulder opal, but it has precious opal dispersed randomly in small fragments throughout the parent rock, rather than in a seam. According to many sources, Opal in Matrix is known as a "Type 3 opal", while precious opal is considered a "Type 1" and Australian boulder opal as a "Type 2". Since it is primarily mined in Honduras, opal in matrix is sometimes traded as "Honduras black opal" because of its dark base color. Honduran matrix opal exhibits tiny spots of precious opal, with play of color throughout. Australian matrix opal may have striated or whirled patterns of precious opal, and tends to have a lighter body color. Matrix opal with tiny pins of color play is formed when the precious opal forms in fine fissures of the host rock. Opal is found in many places around the world, including < href="https://www.gemselect.com/other-gems/ethiopian-opal-gemstone.php">Ethiopia, < href="https://www.gemselect.com/other-gems/ethiopian-opal-gemstone.php">Madagascar (< href="https://www.gemselect.com/cats-eye-opal/cats-eye-opal.php">cat's eye opal), United States (< href="https://www.gemselect.com/moss-opal/moss-opal.php"moss opal), < a href="https://www.gemselect.com/other-gems/mexican-opal-gems.php">Mexico (fire opal),

I have bought several stones and am very happy with the price points, selection and speed of delivery. Sometimes the quality is not quite what I expected but given the prices, I am overall satisfied.

Size and Weight

Gems are always measured in Millimeter (mm)

Dimensions are given as;
length x width x depth,
except for round stones which are;
diameter x depth

Select gems by size, not by weight!
Gem varieties vary in density, so carat weight is not a good indication of size

Note: 1ct = 0.2g
