Buy Black Opal

Black Opal is a gorgeous stone that displays beautiful multicolored effects. It is widely available as treated black opal which undergoes a smoke treatment to bring out its color. This opal is often produced or mined in Ethiopia.

The smoking process deepens the color of the Opal and enhances the play of color. It is made to appear closer to Lightning Ridges Opal through this process. The Ethiopian Black Opal is a great value gemstone with a masculine appearance and therefore an affordable alternative to Untreated Black Opal.

How can I Purchase Black Opal from GemSelect?

At GemSelect we offer an affordable price and an extensive selection of Black Opal. Our Stones are available as Single Stones, Pairs, and Lots for Jewelers. Black Opal is available exclusively in Cabochon Cut and available in a few shapes including a vast selection of Oval Shaped Cabochons.

Fancy Cut, Lots of Black Opal, are available as Rondelle beads with a drilled hole. Feel free to filter our results by size, shape, price, or dimensions for your convenience. If you have any questions about ordering or anything else regarding GemSelect, please visit our FAQ

What Colors can Black Opal Display?

The exciting part of this question is the answer to it which is all colors; however, we do tend to see some uniformity to the stones as they tend to lean more to green, red, purple, or yellow, etc. Some Black Opals are almost entirely black with only a flare of colors while others can appear with the base hues we’ve mentioned above. Some of the stones appear speckled or even marbled. The unique properties are what give character and qualities to each sample, and we believe you will have no trouble finding a stone to your taste with our enormous selection!

What is 'Lightning Ridge Black Opal?'

Natural and Untreated Black Opal is one of the most valuable Opals that exists. It is an incredibly rare, and incredibly expensive for that reason. The Black Opal found in Australia’s Lightning Ridge displays remarkable effects through simple cutting and polishing of the raw stones. These stones have given Black Opal its claim to fame. We don’t have ‘Untreated Black Opal’ often due to its rarity but feel free to check our inventory of Black Opal often if you should so choose.

Is Black Opal a Suitable Birthstone or Anniversary Stone Gift?

Yes, of course! Black Opal is the Gemstone to purchase your loved ones who were born in October. It is an affordable and masculine stone which can appear in numerous jewelry applications due to its availability. If you are looking to purchase Black Opal for an Anniversary Gift ‘be sure’ it’s the 14th as Opal is the accepted gift for this particular year.

Purchasing Black Opal for either of these occasions and having a custom piece made is an excellent idea.

What Kinds of Jewelry are suitable for Black Opal?

Black Opal’s are suitable for many kinds of Jewelry including rings, necklaces, pendants, earrings, bracelets, and more. They happen to be excellent for men’s jewelry and women’s. If you’re interested in designing a ring or pendant, we suggest searching individual cabochons. If earrings are the design, you’re considering; please search our pairs as they’re size and color matched for convince. Black Opal is available as beads too for bracelets and necklaces and lots for jewelers.

I love gemselect and I have bought a fair amount from them. The only complaint I have is not being able to save gems. I have a lot of projects so i am in the market for a lot of different gems and it's so disappointing to have to delete them all just to purchase one or two that I have saved in my cart.

Size and Weight

Gems are always measured in Millimeter (mm)

Dimensions are given as;
length x width x depth,
except for round stones which are;
diameter x depth

Select gems by size, not by weight!
Gem varieties vary in density, so carat weight is not a good indication of size

Note: 1ct = 0.2g
