Apatite Meaning and Healing Powers

Apatite Meaning and Uses
Natural Apatite

Introduction to Apatite

Apatite is a very interesting gemstone which has a rather unusual connection to humans – it is made up of calcium and phosphate which happens to be the most common mineral in our bodies. Perhaps this is why it can have such a profound influence on us.

It was named by 18th century German geologist, Abraham Werner, after the Greek word ‘apate’ which means to deceive as it can easily be mistaken for other gemstones such as peridot, topaz or tourmaline.

There is no doubt that Apatite gemstones are stunning, however, because of their relative softness they are not very popular with jewelers as they can be scratched or broken. As large pendants or as touchstones this is not really an issue.

Apatite Virtues

The color of Apatite

Apatite Gemstone Colors
Apatite Color Range

Apatite comes in a wide range of colors but the most common are the blues, greens and yellows. The yellows can stretch from bright lemon colors to deep honey tones and the blues can rival the famous Paraiba tourmalines for their neon brightness.

Colors have a spiritual meaning all of their own – green can symbolize growth and rebirth, blue signifies wisdom and loyalty while yellow brings joy and optimism.

The Emotional and Spiritual Benefits of Apatite

Apatite is a gemstone of manifestation as it can help you see things clearly and identify anything that is holding you back from achieving your dreams. This will give you the confidence and knowledge needed to make the necessary changes to take the correct path.

It is a motivational gemstone which will get you up and going full of optimism and positivity.

Apatite encourages communication which in turn will bring openness and sociability leading to better relationships and more friends. It will also give you the energy and drive to make the most of these new friendships.

Individual colors can create particular benefits:

  • Yellow – boosts your concentration levels, helps with studies, overcomes lethargy.
  • Blue – Great for public speaking.
  • Green – Helps attract money.

The Physical Benefits of Apatite

Apatite is especially beneficial in all matters to do with bones and teeth, anything to do with calcium as well as helping combat arthritis, swelling of the joints, osteoporosis and even rickets.

Physical Bnefits of Gemstones

It also helps with the digestive system, central organs such as spleen, pancreas, liver and gall bladder and speeds up the metabolic rate and suppresses hunger pangs.

Apatite will also help fight viruses.

With children, Apatite will ease teething problems and growing pains. It aids absorption of calcium and helps cartilage, bones, teeth, and motor skills during growth.

It promotes fitness, a healthy appetite, and animates energy reserves.

Again the different colors can stimulate different health benefits:

  • Yellow – Suppresses hunger and detoxifies the body
  • Blue – Boosts immune system and lowers blood pressure
  • Green – Enhances cardiovascular system

Apatite and the Chakras

Chakra meditation

Chakras are the energy centers in the body. There are seven Chakras throughout the body each influencing a particular physical, emotional or mental state.

The seven chakras are as follows, Crown, Third Eye, Throat, Heart, Solar Plexus, Sacral and Root. The word Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning wheel. Each chakra is assigned a color of influence and a gemstone which has a dominant color will often be connected with that color's chakra point.

Apatite gemstones can come in almost any color to match individual Chakra points.

Blue apatite is connected to the throat Chakra so on a physical level it can aid in all medical issues concerning the throat and neck and, on an emotional level it will help with communication and give you nice lift if you have to give a speech or make a presentation. Yellow apatite affects the solar plexus chakra and deals with relationships and energy. Green apatite is associated with the heart chakra which is the entrance to all forms of healing.

Can Apatite unblock Chakras?

Sometimes our Chakras become unbalanced or out of alignment and need to be realigned or cleansed. One way to do this is through the use of Chakra healing stones.

These stones or crystals are usually colored to correspond to individual chakras, red for the Root Chakra, orange for the Sacral, yellow for the Solar Plexus, green for the Heart, blue for the Throat, Indigo for the Third Eye and purple or white for the Crown Chakra.

As Apatite can be found in a variety of colors they can be used for a few different Chakras.

For example, you may be feeling hyperactive, domineering or particularly fanatical about your political or religious views. This could be a sure sign that your Throat Chakra is blocked. A piece of blue Apatite placed on the throat or neck area either while relaxing or worn as a pendant could work wonders.

Similarly you may be suffering from digestive problems, stomach pains or liver issues. This suggest a blocked Solar Plexus Chakra and a yellow Apatite gemstone could be the answer.

Is Apatite a Birthstone?

Apatite is not a traditional birthstone.

Some people associate Green Apatite with the season of Spring, the renewal of life, and the month of May.

Apatite and the Zodiac

Apatite is quite a modern discovery so has not really built up a strong affinity with the Zodiac although it has some connection to Gemini

How to recharge and cleanse Apatite

Apatite should be cleansed about once a week. The most effective method is using running water. Make sure that it's not too hot since it's sensitive to heat. Cool or tepid water is fine. Do not use salt or sea water for Apatite.

Another safe method is to place the crystal in a bowl with herbs like lavendar.

It is best NOT to charge it in the sun, the color may fade when in sunlight.

This stone is fragile and very sensitive to chemicals, so do not use anything abrasive or caustic when cleaning or cleansing.

Where to place Apatite

Apatite is an inspiring gemstone which can be used anywhere in the home where you feel it may be needed. The centre of the home deals with health, the west side for children and the east for the whole family. Place Apatite in the right place for the right issue.

Apatite is a creative influence so how about putting one in the kitchen to fire up the inner Gordon Ramsay? You will be devising delicious meals in no time. Bon appetite or Bon apatite?

How to use Apatite

We are often asked how to use gemstones for spiritual or health benefits and while we are certainly not experts in this field we have gained some knowledge over the years.

Wearing the gemstone as a piece of jewelry is the easiest way for the crystal to influence your body.

Some colors have connection to different parts of the body, for example green Apatite is associated with the Heart chakra, so a pendant could be ideal while blue Apatite is connected to the Throat chakra, so a necklace would be just right.

Alternatively they can be placed in your purse or pocket and used as a touchstone throughout the day.

Hold some crystals or place them in your lap while meditating.

Lay down with crystals on your body, lined up with the chakra points if possible, meditating or just relaxing.

Put them in the bath but make sure there are no bath salts as it is possible that the Apatite could get affected (very unlikely).

Decorate your home with crystals and certain crystals boost the working environment so keep them on your desk, others help you relax so keep them in the lounge or living room.

Apatite is thought to help with foretelling dreams so placing a gemstone under your pillow before going to bed will boost your chances of having one.

Apatite and wealth

Some gemstones bring fortune and wealth such as citrine and aventurine but Apatite is a bit more indirect when it comes to helping to gain money.

It enhances manifestation of ideas into reality and helps getting results through inspiration, motivation and creativity. Your own hard work will gain you fortune.

Can I use Apatite for Meditation and Yoga?

Apatite is great for both meditation and yoga. It can bring you to a deeper level of meditation and thought and intensify your focus and awareness.

As we have said it is a gemstone of manifestation so a particular daily routine as part of your meditation or yoga session is recommended.

Begin your ritual with an intention or Sankalpas where you set out the guiding principles in reaching your desires. Hold the Apatite gemstone in your hands as you repeat your intention mantra.

Can I wear or carry Apatite every day?

We all have different reactions to different gemstones – one may be encouraging and inspiring to one person but be disturbing to another.

Experiment a little with your Apatite gemstone, perhaps wear one every other day to begin with to tune your body to its vibration.

Apatite Goddesses

Apatite honors the Greek Goddess of the moon, hunting and chastity, Diana and her Roman counterpart Artemis. It also has an association with Gaia, the Earth Mother Goddess.

Can I help my pet with Apatite?

Apatite has a special affinity with the animal kingdom. Its chemical composition is largely made up of phosphate, the same material found in the teeth, tusks, bones, horns and antlers of various animals around the world. For this reason it has come to symbolize animal conservation.

In the home, your pets can benefit from this gemstone’s boost for healthy bones and teeth, too.

Apatite Elixir

Apatite can be made into a quick and simple elixir by putting a gemstone or two into clean spring or mineral water. Thoroughly clean and rinse the gemstone first and keep in the water for an hour or two.

Then you can just drink the water, make it into tea, add to bath water or dab it on any part of your body that could benefit from its healing powers.

Put some Apatite elixir into a spray bottle and give yourself or your room a spritz whenever your creative powers need a boost.

Be warned some gemstones are NOT suitable to be used as elixirs and can be POISONOUS. Take care.

Apatite and Dreams

Apatite can be placed under the pillow (in in a pillow case to stop it from escaping) and used as a dream stone to connect with your subconscious while sleeping. It can also clarify any hard to understand dreams you may be having.

Which gemstones go well with Apatite?

Apatite is an amplifying gemstone so it can enhance other crystal’s powers as well as imparting its own gifts.

Combine it with a Rose Quartz crystal to attract love and strengthen giving and receiving unconditional love.

Clear quartz helps you recognize the changes you need to make in your life to reach your personal goals and ambitions. Combine clear quartz with Apatite and everything will appear that much clearer.

Apatite and Black Tourmaline together make a winning team. The grounding and protection of the tourmaline with the amplifying and motivation of Apatite are unbeatable.

Apatite and the workplace

Apatite might not instantly stand out as a workplace gemstone, such as Citrine or Garnet, but look a bit deeper and you can see how much this crystal can help you at work.

As a Stone of Manifestation it can help realize all our dreams and ambitions – not just in your personal life but in your career and business aspirations.

Blue Apatite is connected to the Throat Chakra and as such it will enhance your communication skills, whether it is a speech, a presentation or a one-on-one interview great communication skills are a vital aspect to a successful career path.

And, of course, Apatite is known to improve creativity, so those working in artistic fields such as writers, musicians, painters, sculptors as well as advertising and marketing would surely benefit from an Apatite crystal.

Apatite Pendulums

Any gemstone you feel comfortable with can be used as a pendulum but Apatite’s reputation as both a gemstone of communication and of manifestation makes it a perfect pendulum.

A pendulum can be used to answer yes and no questions to reveal hidden truths.

Pendulums can be made of anything solid such as a piece of metal, wood, glass connected to a string or chain that can swing freely in any direction.

The pendulum is held in the dominant hand and the chain hangs freely. Ask your pendulum to show you what ‘yes’ is. If the pendulum swings left to right, diagonally or round and round, then that is ‘yes’. Repeat to discover what the sign for ‘no’ is.

Now you are ready to ask your pendulum any question, just relax and be open to receive communication.

Apatite and EMF

Electro-magnetic fields fill the modern world and unless you live completely ‘off-the-grid’ with no phone, wifi or computer you cannot avoid their harmful waves.

Gemstones can provide some protection from this modern pollution but I think there are better gemstones out there than Apatite to do the job – black tourmaline and amazonite come to mind – but as an amplifying gemstone they can help boost another crystal’s power.

Final thoughts on Apatite

On face value, Apatite should be famous, its colors and clarity match many more well-known and expensive gemstones that are found in jewelry stores around the world but its relative softness means it has been somewhat neglected.

Luckily for us the durability of a crystal has no reflection in its spiritual power so this lively colored beauty is quite easily available in a variety of sizes, shapes, styles and tones and very affordable prices.

Generally only the turquoise blue specimens are treated, otherwise Apatite is a completely natural gemstone which is just cut and polished from the rough stone.

Using a bit of imagination, this gemstone could be formed into a striking and eye-catching pendant allowing its powers to permeate and influence the Throat and Solar Plexus Chakras that lie nearby. A wire-wrapped or enclosed pendant would be quite safe from any knocks or bumps.

Alternately just keep a loose crystal about your person or decorating the home or workplace – its good looks and spiritual strengths will reward you.

Dimensions are given as;
length x width x depth,
except for round stones which are;
diameter x depth
