Malachite Meaning and Healing Powers

Malachite Meaning and Uses
Natural Malachite

Introduction to Malachite

If ever a gemstone’s looks reflected its powers it is Malachite. The deep green coloring, the swirls of light and dark shading, the circles that resemble all-seeing eyes and the silky richness of a highly polished stone always grab the attention in a display.

The attractiveness of Malachite is way more than skin deep. To back up this alluring appearance is a spiritual strength that is the match of just about any crystal out there.

Known as the Stone of Transformation, Malachite’s power has been recognized and utilized for thousands of years from the Ancient Egyptians, where it was used in the crowns of the Pharaohs, to the decorations in the palaces of the Russian Czars.

Malachite is a green gemstone representing new life, spring, nature, energy, rebirth, growth, fertility and the natural environment. Green is also associated with money, wealth and prosperity although on the negative side it can also be linked to envy and jealousy.

The Emotional and Spiritual Benefits of Malachite

The Stone of Transformation, Malachite, will help you with the challenges and surprises that life can throw at you from time to time. It will take care of you and protect you when you are feeling your most vulnerable and help you adapt to change and make these changes positive.

Occasionally the change is not forced upon you but instead you feel the need for change. Whether it is a change in lifestyle, relationships or circumstances that you desire, Malachite will be your encouraging and supportive best friend.

Malachite will help you recognize the good people around you as well as spot the toxic relationships and give you the strength and confidence to remove these people from your life.

Malachite can assist in fighting depression and anxiety. It can also help you deal with a number of phobias, including the fear of flying and the fear of heights.

The Physical Benefits of Malachite

Malachite, also known as 'The Midwife's Stone' in addition to its title as the Stone of Transformation, has long been recognized for its beneficial effects on women's health. It has been used for centuries to alleviate the discomforts of childbirth, regulate menstruation, ease menstrual cramps, enhance fertility, and provide emotional support during PMS.

Physical Bnefits of Gemstones

Some of Malachite’s other attributes include lowering blood pressure, sore joints, arthritis, rheumatism, myalgia and liver issues. It can boost the immune system and help with malaria, asthma and stomach ailments.

Malachite and the Chakras

Chakra meditation

As a classic green gemstone, malachite is associated with the Heart Chakra in Hindu tantric philosophy. The Chakras are energy centers located about the body which influence your physical and mental well-being.

If a particular Chakra is out of alignment or blocked then there are various methods used to clear them including the use of gemstones, usually based on the color of the gemstone matching the color linked to the Chakra.

Signs of a blocked Heart Chakra include feelings of jealousy, envy, anger, grief, dwelling on old relationships, inability to commit to a new relationship and feelings of self-loathing. Physically this can manifest itself in heart issues and allergies.

Can Malachite unblock Chakras?

Bringing malachite into your life can help unblock or realign your Heart Chakra. The simplest method is to lie down with a Malachite gemstone placed over the heart. Clear your mind, relax, breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth and let the Malachite do its work.

A Malachite pendant, brooch or necklace can help unblock or keep open the Heart Chakra throughout the day.

Is Malachite a Birthstone?

Malachite is not a traditional or official birthstone but can be a natural birthstone for those born in the springtime – March to May in the northern hemisphere or September to November in the southern half of the world.

Malachite and the Zodiac

Malachite is most associated with the Zodiac sign of Taurus the bull but also has some affinity with those born under the signs of Cancer and Scorpio.

How to recharge and cleanse Malachite

Malachite is said to absorb negative energy more than most gemstones so needs to be cleansed and recharged quite often. There are several ways to cleanse crystals using such things as water, the sun or moon, smudging, salt or the earth.

Malachite is quite a soft gemstone so any rough or abrasive handling should be avoided – I would not recommend any salt cleansing.

Running your Malachite under water, preferably a clear natural stream, waterfall or spring, but tap water will do, is totally safe for your gemstone and will suffice for a quick cleanse. (It is possible that an warm Malachite placed in icy cold water could break but very unlikely.)

A nice way to give your Malachite a cleansing treat is to smudge it, that is allow smoke from an incense stick or dried herbs to waft over the surface of your gemstone.

Laying your Malachite out in the sun can cleanse and recharge although it may be safer to give it a night under a full moon as there is no danger of damage by exposure to the moon's rays.

So long as your soil is not too acidic then a day or two buried in the back yard can also repower your Malachite.

Where to place Malachite?

Malachite can enhance health and family happiness when placed on the eastern side of your home, while bringing prosperity when positioned in the southeast corner.

This versatile gemstone of change is beneficial in areas where new projects are underway or recent transformations have occurred. A child's bedroom, symbolizing growth and development, can benefit from the presence of Malachite.

In your office, Malachite can help maintain high energy levels during busy days.

How to use Malachite

Malachite can make very interesting jewelry items although its softness means it will need protective settings and this is the best way to keep this gemstone on your person throughout the day. A Malachite pendant or necklace is especially affective as it will lie close to the Heart Chakra location.

Alternatively a Malachite gemstone placed in the pocket or purse can be carried about all day and used as a touchstone for reassurance when needed.

If you meditate, a Malachite gemstone held in the palm of the hand will strengthen your connection to Gaia or Mother Earth. You can just enjoy simple meditation with Malachite or try a more complex method by saying out loud whatever it is that is causing your anxiety or pain – the Malachite can absorb this pain.

If you prefer just find a peaceful spot to lie down with a Malachite gemstone placed over the middle of the chest and relax.

Malachite and wealth

Gemstones do not magically make you rich (although lovers of Green Adventurine might argue that) but give you the strength and confidence to manifest any or all of your wishes.

Malachite is a ‘Stone of Transformation’ and will take away any doubts you may have over decisions to do with money and finances.

Malachite gives you creativity, energy, positivity and self-belief – all great assets in the pursuit of wealth.

Can I use Malachite for Meditation?

Malachite symbolizes Gaia, Mother Earth, Mother Nature, call it what you will, and meditation links us to Mother Nature so they make great bedfellows.

Keep a Malachite gemstone in your hand or on the mat (better still on the grass outside) while you meditate and you will feel a strong and vibrant connection.

Can I wear or carry Malachite every day?

Malachite is a spiritually powerful gemstone and we all have different reactions to its influence. If you feel any adverse reactions when wearing or carrying a Malachite gemstone then perhaps take a break and build up exposure to it over a period of time.

It might be a good idea at this time to point out the potential hazards of Malachite.

A polished loose Malachite gemstone employed in normal circumstances poses absolutely no danger to its owner. An unpolished ‘raw’ or untreated piece of Malachite may be a different matter as with improper handling dust or powder could flake off the gemstone and be inhaled. It is incredibly unlikely that there would be enough dust to be harmful but do be aware.

If you plan to cut, grind or polish your own rough malachite then protective equipment and the correct workspace is a must.

Malachite Goddesses

Malachite is associated with Hathor the Egyptian Goddess of women, motherhood, fertility and love. This particular Goddess has very ancient origins and is probably the basis of almost all subsequent female deities.

As an interesting side note, Hathor was also the protector of miners in ancient times.

Can I help my pet with Malachite?

If your pet is suffering with heart or liver problems then Malachite will be a great help but this is not my favorite gemstone to mix with pets.

It is possible for animals, especially dogs, to chew and gnaw on objects left under their beds or by their drinking bowls so a Malachite with its potentially toxic make-up should be kept out of reach.

I have never been too keen on the idea of putting any gemstone in a pet’s drinking bowl unless it is too big to swallow (then I am all for it!) and leaving certain Malachite gemstones for too long in water can be problematic.

Malachite Elixir

To err on the side of caution I think it is best NOT to use Malachite in an elixir, the slight potential for things going wrong outweigh the benefits. The chances of a polished Malachite poisoning the water is minimal but why risk it?

Malachite and Dreams

Malachite is one of those gemstones which will have different effects on different people (aren’t they all really?). For many, malachite will lead to a peaceful and undisturbed night’s sleep while in others is will stimulate vivid dreams.

In the Middle Ages Malachite was used kept in the bedroom to prevent nightmares.

These dreams are not necessarily disturbing and the Malachite will help you remember the dreams and perhaps aid in interpreting their meaning.

Which gemstones go well with Malachite?

Malachite can be a tricky gemstone when working with other crystals. Its power can amplify spiritual powers found in other gemstones that will be detrimental to the influence of the Malachite itself.

That being said, the millennia old combination of Malachite, Lapis Lazuli and Onyx make for a very strong and effective team.

Other potentially good Malachite combinations include pairing it with Red Jasper and Black Tourmaline.

Is Malachite good for Yoga?

As a grounding and calming gemstone with a connection to Gaia or Mother Earth, Malachite can certainly be a benefit while you are practicing yoga much like it can help with meditation.

Many malas or garlands of meditation or prayer beads are made of Malachite (often in conjunction with other gemstones) and are used for yoga too.

Malachite and the workplace

Malachite is a gemstone of transformation, encouraging self-confidence, good fortune and creativity so there is no better gemstone to have in your workplace. Be careful though because it can encourage risky business decisions but if they work out well, fortune and prosperity will come your way.

Malachite is also an excellent gemstone for absorbing electro magnetic radiation so have one near a power source or computer to protect you from EMF.

Malachite Pendulums

A pendulum is a simple tool for yes/no answers to questions to and from the spiritual world. Malachite’s strong energy vibrations can focus the pendulum and cause it to move in a clear and forthright manner giving specific answers to your questions.

Malachite and EMF

Malachite is well known to absorb energy especially plutonium energy and radiation. If your home or office has a lot of wires or large wifi source place or hang some malachite in front of that area for protection.

Final thoughts on Malachite

If you are lucky enough to ever visit the magnificent city of St Petersburg in Russia on the Baltic coast then please take the time to visit The Hermitage Museum. The former Winter Palace of the Russian Czars is now a wonderful art museum and includes the Malachite Room amongst its attractions.

The Malachite columns, fireplace and incredible urns that decorate this room have to be seen to be believed and are simply awe inspiring. Their beauty will draw you in and their spiritual power is so strong you have to force yourself not to run your hands over their surface.

Visit any gem store and I am pretty sure one of the first gemstones you will notice will be malachite, the rich green colors, the swirling lines and waxy polish are irresistible. Hopefully the owners of the gem store will not be as strict as the guards at the Hermitage and will allow you to hold and caress this gorgeous gemstone – after all it will almost certainly guarantee a sale!
