Yellow topaz, also referred to as 'precious topaz', is an especially rare color for topaz to naturally occur in. It is in fact one of the rarest and most valuable color varieties of topaz available today. Fine golden-yellow topaz is highly sought after for its remarkable color and superior hardness (8 on the Mohs scale). The ancient Egyptians believed that yellow topaz was colored after the golden glow of the mighty sun god, Ra, which made it a very powerful amulet stone that was thought to protect the faithful against harm. The most desirable topaz is called 'imperial topaz', which can range from fine golden-yellow to pinkish and reddish orange. Because yellow topaz is so rare, it is often referred to as 'precious topaz'.

Topaz gemstones exhibit pleochroism, which can give the appearance of several colors in one and the same stone, depending on the viewing angle. Yellow topaz is fairly durable due to its hardness so it can be worn as any type of jewelry design. However, because topaz can be split with a single blow, a trait it shares with diamond, wearers should take special care to protect it from hard knocks.

Deposits of topaz have been found in Brazil, Afghanistan, Australia, Myanmar (Burma), China, Germany, Japan, Madagascar, Mexico, Namibia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russia, Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, Ukraine and the USA.

I have used this site for sseveral years now. All has been great. I started collection gems from GemSelect for years and wanted to collect at least one of most stones. I loved Safers because the mols is a 9 + and they come in every color. This is the best place to buy gems for the assortment and price. Great place to learn about gems too. Sometimes the shipping is a little on the long side. But I would give them a 9.9 out of 10 !!

So many gorgeous stones! The only "complaint" I have is it's difficult to visualize sizes in mm. Perhaps some way to compare in inches?It has been a long time since I bought stones from Gem select, but the process wasn't too difficult.

I really enjoy browsing through GemSelect. The selection is always marvelous and I love how detailed everything is described. The only thing I noticed is that when browsing through my phone, the videos of the gems do not load. If there were more videos of the gems, that would be amazing, though I understand that is a lot of work on GemSelect's part! Checking out is also very fast and easy, and I love that the return policy is very good, though I hope I don't have to use it anytime soon.
