Introduction to Aquamarine

'the lovely aquamarine . . . . seems to have come from some mermaid's treasure house'.

So said Roman historian and philosopher, Pliny, around 2000 years ago.

This historical gemstone has featured in writings for at least 3000 years and was revered by ancient Sumerian, Egyptian and Greek cultures and as an object of great beauty and of great spiritual strength.

Its fame as a gemstone of spiritual power is reflected in the carvings that survive from this period, hoopoe birds which were use to communicate with water spirits or to raise the dead, frogs which could restore peace to warring enemies and crows which bestowed happiness on their owner.

To the Greeks it was the sailor's best friend or the sailor's stone as carrying one ensured safe travels on the waters.

As the source of its name would suggest, the finest colors of aquamarine are remindful of the sea and the color of Aquamarine gemstones range from blue to blue-green, and can be pale to light-blue, dark-blue, green-blue, or blue-green (aquamarine blue).

Blue is a universally loved color, in every culture across the world it gives off a positive vibe, representing trust, tranquility, relaxation, protection and healing. Aquamarine’s spiritual strength reflects these feelings perfectly.

Aquamarine is a panacea for many ailments. Pregnant women can wear this gemstone to protect both mother and baby from harm.

When the throat chakra is out of balance the physical symptoms may include sore throats, stiff neck, and headaches.

Emotionally, when it is out of balance, you also might find yourself habitually lying, feeling fearful and doubt the intentions of others. You may also find yourself stammering or at a loss for words on occasion.

When it's blocked, a closed Heart Chakra can bring grief, anger, jealousy, fear of betrayal, and dislike of yourself and others—especially in holding a grudge against past loves.

Aquamarine can unblock or realign Chakras. To unblock the Throat or Heart Chakra find a quiet place to relax and place an Aquamarine gemstone over the appropriate part of the body. Lie still or meditate if you prefer, breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth.

To enhance the experience you could try a visualization technique. If, for example, you are trying to unblock the Throat Chakra, place the Aquamarine in the small of your throat (NOT inside the throat) and lie down.

Get your breathing just right. Imagine a glowing blue ball of energy hovering around the gemstone. Feel it grow and expand with every breath from the size of a marble to the size of a football. Gently open your eyes.

Aquamarine is a durable gemstone able to be cleansed and recharged using most traditional methods but with its affinity to water I would suggest the ocean or a waterfall is the best possible method.

Taking care not to drop them (I once lost a Moonstone Cat’s Eye in the shallow waves and never saw it again) let the water flow over your gemstones. Find a safe place and let them dry in the sun.

Aquamarine is a gemstone that needs quite a regular cleanse and recharge but heading to the beach or waterfall everyday may not be an option (worse luck) so run them under the tap at home if needs be. A refreshing spring shower of rain or a dramatic thunderstorm could provide an impromptu opportunity.

With its association with water and its reputation for maintaining youthfulness, I think Aquamarine would be a great gemstone for the bathroom or wherever you perform your daily beauty regime.

It also instills calm and serenity so Aquamarine near the bathtub will help with those long relaxing soaks that can take the edge off a long day or tiring week.

Aquamarine does have a reputation for assisting with communication so if you hold a lot of meetings, make a few telephone calls or send a lot of emails keep a gemstone nearby to keep those connections flowing smoothly.

There are many ways to use Aquamarine in a spiritual way.

To gain the most influence throughout the day, simply wear some as jewelry. Aquamarine is a durable gemstone so can be made into any type of jewelry but with its connection to the Throat Chakra and Heart Chakra, a pendant, necklace or even earrings would make a lot of sense.

Alternatively, you could just carry a gemstone or two around with you, in a pocket, your handbag or purse, they could work away happily there or you could use them as touch stones if you felt the need for extra reassurance during the day.

I saw an article on ‘bra stones’ just recently – I promise I was researching gemstones not bras – where a crystal is slipped into the bra to deliver maximum energy to the body. Being perfectly in position to affect the Heart and Throat Chakra, an Aquamarine seems to be the perfect bra stone.

Aquamarine may be able to indirectly bring wealth through its influence over communication and keeping you cool under pressure but I feel there are better gemstones to bring in money or fortune – Citrine or Aventurine for example.

Aquamarine has an association with a couple of less regular Goddesses.

In keeping with Aquamarine’s affinity to water it has been dedicated to Aphrodite, the Greek Goddess of Love, who was born from the foaming waves of the sea as they washed ashore on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus.

Aquamarine is also connected to Guanyin, the Chinese and Buddhist deity of compassion, mercy and unconditional love.

There really could not be a better gemstone for making an elixir than Aquamarine. Purifying and calming, a cool bottle or glass of this crystal liquid can be used in a variety of ways from simply being a refreshing drink, used to make herbal tea, put in the bath or, my favorite, put in a spray bottle so you can give yourself a cooling mist on the hottest day.

To make an elixir, just pop an Aquamarine gemstone or two into some pure mineral or distilled water. Make sure the water is in a glass bottle or container – not plastic or metal – and if you can place it by a window where it can bathe in the rays of the sun and moon for a day and night.

Take out the gemstone and you have your elixir.
