Where did the idea of birthstones come from? Having a connection to a particular gemstone goes back centuries in both Eastern and Western cultures.

The bible mentions the breastplate of Moses' brother, Aaron, with its twelve gemstones representing the twelve tribes of Israel.

Zodiac signs and astrology have also played their part and Hindu traditions chart the hour, day and year of your birth to determine which of the nine sacred gemstones you should wear.

Calendars, beliefs and customs have changed but we still love the idea that one or two gemstones are special to us.

It would be a little cynical (but not wrong) to feel that our modern birthstones are just a marketing ploy launched by the Jeweler's Association in 1912 to sell more gemstones.

Adding the newly discovered Tanzanite in 2002 and the criminally neglected Spinel in 2016 does hint at the influence of an advertizing agency.

But I say let's just enjoy another reason to own such a lovely piece of the natural world.
