Sphene is named from the Greek word for wedge, because of its typical wedge shaped crystal habit. The mineralogical name "Titanite" derives from its titanium contents. Sphene is strongly pleochroic, displaying at least three colors (colorless, greenish-yellow, reddish) when looked at from different angles.

Titanite: The Scientific Perspective

Natural sphene is scientifically known as Titanite, named after its titanium content.

Composition: Primarily composed of calcium titanium silicate, Titanite's chemical formula is CaTiSiO5.
Mohs Hardness: With a hardness rating of 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale, the Sphene gemstone requires careful handling to prevent scratching.

I have used this site for sseveral years now. All has been great. I started collection gems from GemSelect for years and wanted to collect at least one of most stones. I loved Safers because the mols is a 9 + and they come in every color. This is the best place to buy gems for the assortment and price. Great place to learn about gems too. Sometimes the shipping is a little on the long side. But I would give them a 9.9 out of 10 !!
