Bloodstone is a gemstone with a history that stretches back deeply to the times of the Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. It was admired as much for its spiritual strength as its dramatic beauty.

Bloodstone is a type of chalcedony which in turn is a type of quartz. It shares a very similar chemical make-up and crystal structure as other gemstones such as agate, jasper and chrysoprase which are usually separated into varieties by color, patterns or banding. Bloodstone is basically the deep green variety of chalcedony.
The ideal Bloodstone would probably have a deep forest green color with some bright red flecks decorating the surface. Even such excellent examples will not be very expensive as Bloodstone is a readily available and easily affordable gemstone.
Bloodstones can be found in all sizes and the price per carat is determined by the color not the carat weight. The majority of gemstones will be just $1 or $2 per carat with only the finest examples reaching a maximum of about $6 per carat.
