Opal
More than any other gem, each opal is distinctly individual. No other gemstone has such rich and varied a folklore. Opals are also the most delicate gems commonly worn. They require special care to ensure their health and longevity. There are many varieties of opal, including black opal, white opal, common opal (potch), chocolate opal, boulder opal, opal doublet, opal triplet, fire opal and opal in matrix.

Opal's fire was long thought to be the result of iridescence. However, with the advent of scanning electron microscopes, we now know that it is a result of diffraction, and is known in the gem trade as play of color. Opal is relatively soft, with a rating of 5.5-6.5 on the Mohs scale. Despite its frequent use in gemstone rings, opal is not the greatest choice as a ring stone; it is however, very-well suited for other types of gemstone jewelry, including gemstone earrings, pins and gemstone pendants.

Major suppliers include Australia, Brazil, Ethiopia, Mexico, Peru and the United States. Values are normally determined by the presence and nature of color flashes, except in the case of Mexican fire opal, where body color is most valued.

Size and Weight

Gems are always measured in Millimeter (mm)

Dimensions are given as;
length x width x depth,
except for round stones which are;
diameter x depth

Select gems by size, not by weight!
Gem varieties vary in density, so carat weight is not a good indication of size

Note: 1ct = 0.2g
