Gemstones for Wednesday

Gemstones for Wednesday
Wednesday Gemstones

The tradition of monthly birthstones is well known and many of us are familiar with the gemstones connected to particular zodiac signs but did you know that each day has a gemstone connection, too?

Knowing which gemstones is linked to what day can provide an additional personalized relationship between you and the stone. Perhaps you were born on that day or you are celebrating a special occasion.

Humankind’s arrival at 7 days in each week and 365 days in a year has been a long, long journey probably begun by farmers and refined by astrologers. Links with the planets and the gods occurred throughout the world.

Wednesday got its name in English from the Norse god, Odin or Woden. This northern deity was linked to the Roman god Mercury from where we get mercredi in French and miercoles in Spanish. Rather boring is the German Mittwoch – mid-week – and the Chinese ’Day Three’.

After trawling through the history and etymology of Wednesday and its gods, goddesses and planets we have come up with two ideal Wednesday gemstones.

Amethyst

Once upon a time Amethyst were as valuable as sapphires and rubies and were worn by royalty and religious leaders as symbols of power and wealth.

The color purple used to be so expensive to produce that it was only worn by the very rich and this high value was reflected in the lilac, violet and mauve tones found in the best amethyst gemstones.

In addition to its superficial beauty, amethyst is known for its spiritual strength. It is the stress reliever of the crystal world, calming and soothing during even the most anxious of times.

Cat’s Eye Gemstones

Certain gemstones display an unusual phenomenon known as chatoyancy or cat’s eye. A reflection of light by parallel fibers or tubes within the gemstone can cause a thin glowing line on the surface of the gem that resembles the pupil in the eye of a cat.

This can occur in a number of different gemstones – opal, moonstone, chrysoberyl and scapolite to name but a few.

Cat’s eyes are renowned for their healing powers and influence over our physical and emotional well-being. Stress relief, boosted memory and enhanced eye-sight are a few more of its benefits.

Did You Know?

In Thailand Wednesday is Wan Put. Wan is day and Put is Buddha, so for years I thought it meant it was Buddha’s Day but this is a different Buddha - this one is Budh, the god of the planet Mercury in India.

In the Addams Family books and movies, the daughter is called Wednesday because of the line in the old nursery rhyme ‘Wednesday’s child is full of woe’.
