Nuummite Gemstone Information![]() About Nuummite - History and IntroductionNuummite is the trade name for a rare black gemstone with flecks that show an iridescent play of color. It is a metamorphic rock, which means that it is formed as a result of the transformation of existing rock. The main constituents of Nuummite are gedrite and anthophyllite, with lesser amounts of pyrite, pyrrhotine and chalcopyrite. Nuummite's iridescent play of color is due to its lamellar, fibrous structure (alternating fibrous layers). Nuummite was discovered in the early 1980s, so it is a fairly new gemstone. Its name means "from Nuuk", because it was found in the Nuuk region of Greenland. Although Nuummite was only recently discovered, it was formed more than three billion years ago, so it is also known as the oldest rock on earth.
Nuummite is quite a unique gemstone and can be recognized by its dark body color interspersed by iridescent flecks that give it its play of color. Nuummite is found in the Nuuk region of West Greenland.

Darkly colored gemstones that contain flecks of pyrite or mica can appear similar to Nuummite. Dark larvikite has a similar appearance to Nuummite. Nuummite is chemically related to orthorhombic amphiboles, which also contain anthophyllite.
Nuummite is said to be the oldest rock on earth and it has been called the Sorcerer's Stone because it is said to be able to unlock the magic within the individual and bring forth inner power. Nuummite is believed to bring energy to its wearer and to prevent fatigue and stress. Additionally, it is attributed with the ability to stimulate circulation and provide protection. In traditional Indian belief systems, Nuummite is said to activate the root chakra, which is associated with energy.
Nuummite is often set in silver and made into pendants or earrings. It is also used for rings, usually in protective bezel settings. Nuummite can also be wire-wrapped or drilled to make attractive pendants, earrings or beads. The deep color of Nuummite makes it a suitable gemstone for both ladies' and men's jewelry. Note: Buy colored gemstones by size and not by carat weight. Colored stones vary in size-to-weight ratio. Some stones are larger and others are smaller than diamonds by weight in comparison.
