Topaz Meaning and Healing Powers
Introduction
Topaz is a gemstone that is often associated with meanings of strength, courage, and protection. This versatile gem comes in a variety of colors, each with its own unique symbolism. Yellow topaz, for example, is believed to promote creativity and self-confidence, while blue topaz is associated with communication and emotional balance. In terms of healing powers, topaz is thought to have a soothing effect on the mind and body, helping to alleviate anxiety and promote relaxation. It is also believed to aid in physical healing, particularly in issues related to digestion and metabolism. Overall, the topaz gemstone is considered a powerful stone for promoting mental clarity, emotional well-being, and overall vitality.
In man's long history with gemstones the name 'Topaz' has cropped up many times.
The bible mentions Topaz a number of times as a gemstone of Aaron's breastplate and a foundation stone of Jerusalem.
Ancient Egyptians believed golden colored Topaz was created by the sun god, Ra, while Ancient Greeks came up with the name topaz from the legendary island of gems, Topazios, in the Red Sea.
Of course, this was a time before scientists were able to peer into the crystal depths of stones and test their refraction and dispersion so Topaz and diamonds and peridots and chrysolites were often confused with each other.
It was not just in the Mediterranean that Topaz was held in such high esteem, the Hindus of India has Yellow Topaz as one of their holy gemstones of Jyotish astrology and African bushmen used Topaz to communicate with the spirits.

In the distant past, virtually all yellowish gemstones were known as Topaz and this is its most common natural color. However, Topaz can also be found in pink, orange, red, purple and blue forms, sometimes naturally and sometimes due to treatments.
The most popular topaz color is blue – the most famous being Swiss Blue and London Blue – and the most sought after and expensive is a golden yellow to pink-orange version called Imperial Topaz.
In 1740, a 1680 carat diamond was found in Brazil and brought to Portugal to be set in the Royal Crown jewels. However the diamond turned out to be a huge clear Topaz. It was a stunning gemstone and can still be seen on display today.
The variety of colors in Topaz can affect their spiritual powers.
- Clear / White Topaz - brings inspiration and hope, opens the mind to new thoughts
- Pink Topaz – promotes true love and honesty
- Golden / Imperial Topaz – turns dreams and ambitions into reality
- Blue Topaz – brings peaceful reflection and encourages communication
Topaz is a soothing gemstone which can be used to calm anxieties and treat depression.
It can balance the emotions of those with expansive mood swings, promoting self-control.
Topaz can help you express your ideas and communicate well in both work situations and in personal relationships – encouraging openness, forgiveness and honesty with others.
Topaz can assist in combating eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia.
Stress is the silent threat to many people's lives – it causes so many of the physical ailments that befall us such as heart disease, obesity, diabetes, stomach ulcers and so on. Topaz can reduce our stress levels – an emotional benefit which will lead to physical benefits.
In addition, Topaz has always been seen as a preventative measure when it comes to health, wearing one or placing some in the home will keep away most of the usual infections and colds.
In India it is said to be especially effective in fighting inflammation and is used to treat mumps, tonsillitis and whooping cough.
For centuries it has been used to slow down failing eyesight, cure blurred vision and soothe tired eyes.
Other health benefits include treating fevers, gout, circulation, digestion, stimulating metabolism, easing arthritis and boosting male virility.
As it can be found in a number of colors, including the very powerful clear version, Topaz is a useful chakra gemstone.
The chakras, according to ancient Vedic philosophy, are 7 vital points located around the body which can influence our physical and mental well being. From time to time these chakras can get blocked leading to illnesses or problems. Various methods such as massage, meditation and herbs can be used to unblock a chakra as can gemstones.
Each chakra has an assigned color and a gemstone of the same or similar color can be placed on the location of the chakra to open it up again.

Yes, it certainly can and since it is available in so many different colors it can be used to realign or unblock several chakras.
- Clear Topaz - Crown Chakra – although this chakra has a purple color most clear gemstones are associated with the crown chakra. If you are suffering from headaches or migraines or lacking faith or spirituality then it could be a sign your crown chakra is blocked.
- Blue Topaz - Throat Chakra – a troubled throat chakra can manifest itself in many ways including sore throats, stiff necks or difficulty in communication and expressing yourself. A well placed blue Topaz can help.
- Imperial Topaz - Solar Plexus/Sacral Chakras – signs of a blocked solar plexus chakra include feelings of pessimism and low confidence while a blocked sacral chakra can show itself as a lack of sexual desire. The golden orange Imperial Topaz will help both.
Lie down and place a crystal over the corresponding chakra. Meditate in this position to realign and balance the chakra system.
Topaz is the traditional birthstone for November, sharing the duties with Citrine while Blue Topaz can be used as an alternative December birthstone.
Blue Topaz is also the gemstone gift for the 4th wedding anniversary and Imperial Topaz is the gift for the 23rd.

Topaz is a zodiac gemstone for those born under the sign of Sagittarius, Scorpio and sometimes Aries. It is also connected to the Chinese Zodiac sign of the Horse and the Jyotish sign for Jupiter which includes Sagittarius and Pisces.

Topaz is a very durable gemstone so it will be able to stand up to most types of cleansing and recharging ceremonies. The one method I might suggest avoiding would be placing it in direct sunlight as Topaz has been known to fade.
Running under fresh water, a smudge with some smoke and a night out under the full moon would be perfect to cleanse and recharge your Topaz.
Topaz is a very useful gemstone which can be placed in a variety of places.
Topaz can be placed in the home to keep you and your family healthy. It is a lucky stone that protects the home against accidents and fires.
Placed under a pillow it will ward off nightmares and prevent sleep walking.
Keep one or two in the south part of your home to strengthen your reputation and local standing.
Place a yellow or orange Topaz gemstone in any activity room to energize the area and fill it with 'fire energy'.
If you, or someone you know, is recovering from an illness or operation then a Topaz placed nearby will speed up the recovery time.
We know gemstones are good for us but what is the best way to use gemstones for their spiritual and health benefits?
The spiritual power of Topaz is renowned and the easiest way for this power to influence you throughout the day is as jewelry.
Remember the color of the jewelry influences the various Chakra points – a blue topaz pendant would be close to the Throat Chakra while a pair of clear Topaz earrings can affect the Crown Chakra.
Occasionally, it might not be appropriate to wear expensive looking jewelry so the topaz could be carried in your pocket or in a purse or handbag. They can continue influencing the body from there and can always be reached for when extra reassurance is needed..
At home, the house can be decorated with colored topaz or they can be placed on Chakra points during relaxation or meditation.

Topaz can be a gemstone of good luck but it will bring you wealth through hard work and application more than by winning the lottery!
It is a stone of motivation and manifestation, getting you up and about and reaching your ambitions through honesty, self-control, problem solving, creativity and inspiration.

Topaz enhances relaxation, creates lightness of spirit, and stimulates feelings of peace so it is an excellent gemstone for meditation. Clear Topaz is very encouraging for affirmations and visualization, as well as aiming one's focus for healing, attraction and manifestation.
Clear Topaz placed next to the mat during yoga can bring clarity of mind and a lightness to the body that will really enhance a session.

Some gemstones can be very powerful and take getting used to – moldavite, for example, can be very uncomfortable to wear for novices and amber can cause reactions in certain people.
Topaz generally has a gentle power which should not cause anyone issues but we all have different responses to gemstone vibrations and properties so take your time in getting used to wearing this crystal every day.
Topaz goddesses seem to have a connection to the sun, reflecting its old reputation as a yellow or orange gemstone.
This includes the Japanese Sun Goddess, Amaterasu, the Irish Sun Goddess, Grainne (Grian) and the Hittite Goddess, Wurusemu.
Demeter and her daughter, Persephone, represent spring, harvest and growth, and the sun nurtures all these natural phenomena, and both are honored by Topaz.
Our pets suffer from similar physical and mental ailments as we do and can be treated in much the same way by crystals. Animals also have Chakra points in roughly comparable locations around the body as us.
For example a dog with bad hips could benefit from the presence of hematite which works on the Root Chakra which in turns helps with hip problems.
Topaz is not especially linked with the treatment of pets but I have heard that Clear Topaz is used by psychics and spiritualists to mentally communicate with animals – both physical and spirit animals.

With such a long history, it is no surprise that Topaz has been mentioned a few times in restorative recipes.
13th Century mystic, St Hildegard was famous for her remedies for various ailments and came up with this one for failing eyesight:
- 'steep a topaz in wine for three days and then lightly rub it over the eyes'.
Elixirs work just as well with water as with wine – make a simple elixir by placing a gemstone in water overnight (in a full moon for extra power).
You can gain all the benefits of the gemstone by drinking the water, using it to make tea, putting it in your bath water, dabbing it on affected parts of the body or putting it in an atomizer and spraying the room or house with a refreshing aura.
Be aware that some gemstones CANNOT be used as elixirs because of their dangerous content.
Along with all the other effects of this gemstone, a glass of Topaz elixir before bed is supposed to help sleep while tea with Blue Topaz elixir and honey helps a sore throat.
As mentioned above, a glass of Topaz elixir just before bedtime ensures a good night's sleep and keeps away nightmares. It is also supposed to prevent sleep-walking.
Dreaming about Topaz gemstones suggests that any problems you may be facing in real life will soon be resolved.
As a general guide certain types of crystals can combine well:
- Gemstones of a similar color
- Gemstones with the same crystal structure
- Gemstones with the same element
- Gemstones with the same zodiac association
- Gemstones with the same Chakra association
- Gemstones with the same mineral group
Using this guide we can see Blue Topaz and Blue Agate would go together very nicely, especially in activating the Throat Chakra or to treat anxiety.
Topaz and Peridot share the same crystal structure and a long history of working together.
Blue Topaz and Lapis Lazuli share a similar color and the same element. They can work together to boost your creativity.
Topaz is a gemstone which will help you attain your goals and ambitions so keeping one at work may well get you that promotion or complete that deal.
Blue Topaz boosts your communication skills which is vital in almost every workplace, keep one on your desk, by your computer or phone, in your pocket during meetings and presentations, anywhere that communication takes place.
Clear Topaz brings inspiration and hope and opens the mind to fresh thoughts and ideas – perfect for any new project you are undertaking.
Pendulums are an entertaining way of uncovering hidden truths about yourself.
Hang a crystal from a string or chain or use a gemstone pendant and ask a series of yes or no questions to get into your subconscious. The movement of the pendulum will reveal the answers.
Blue topaz is a gemstone of communication so would be perfect for a pendulum, they are also available in nice large sizes which swing well.
If your Q and A session is to do with passion and romance, a pink topaz brings honesty and love to the table.
The modern world is full of smart phones, computers, wifi routers and interactive TVs so we are constantly engulfed in harmful electro-magnetic waves.
Many gemstones can offer protection from these waves but I would suggest Black Tourmaline or Amazonite would be a better option than Topaz.

Topaz has a history stretching back thousands of years but the most valuable type, Imperial Topaz, was only discovered in the Ural Mountains of Russia in the 18th century. The stunning orangey-pink gemstone was named in honor of the royal family and was so treasured that only the Czar could own one.
The word, Topaz, may have come from the Greek name for an island in the Red Sea, Topazos, where a yellow stone was mined more than 2000 years ago but I prefer the Sanskrit work 'Tapas' which could also be its source.
'Tapas' means fire and I feel it captures this wonderful gemstone's brilliant essence.
Topaz is a versatile gemstone which comes in many colors, sizes and shapes that will suit all budgets and tastes. Take a look today, I am sure you will find at least one look you will love.
