FAQs

What makes loose opals unique compared to other gemstones?

Loose opals are known for their vibrant play-of-color, a dazzling phenomenon where colors shift depending on the light. This makes natural opals such as Ethiopian opals and Australian opals stand out from other loose gemstones.

What is the difference between a black opal and a fire opal?

Black opals have a dark body tone, enhancing their play-of-color, while fire opals are prized for their bright orange or red hues and do not always display the same color shifting. Both are highly sought-after varieties of loose opals.

How are opal doublets and opal triplets different from natural opals?

Opal doublets are made by layering a thin slice of precious opal onto a backing, while opal triplets add an extra protective layer on top. These types of opals are more affordable than solid natural opals, like those found in Ethiopian opal or Australian opal varieties.

How can I tell if an opal is natural or treated?

A natural opal typically has more visible inclusions and imperfections, whereas treated opals, such as opal doublets and opal triplets, are crafted with enhancements. A certified opal grading can help you identify the authenticity and quality of your loose opal.

What is an opal cabochon, and why is it popular?

An opal cabochon is a smooth, rounded gem cut without facets, allowing the stone's play-of-color to be fully appreciated. These loose opals are often used in classic and custom opal jewelry designs.

Why are Ethiopian opals and Australian opals so popular?

Ethiopian opals are admired for their bright, diverse colors and affordability, while Australian opals, especially black opals, are highly prized for their deep, vibrant hues and exceptional play-of-color.

How should I care for my loose opals?

To maintain the beauty of your loose opal, avoid exposure to high heat or chemicals, and clean it gently with a soft cloth. Opal cabochons, opal doublets, and fire opals should be stored separately to prevent scratches, preserving their opal grading and value.

What are opal gemstones?

Opal gemstones are natural stones known for their unique play-of-color, displaying flashes of various colors like blue, green, red, and yellow. Types include black opal, white opal, fire opal, and boulder opal.

What types of opal gemstones are available?

Available opals include black opal, white opal, fire opal, boulder opal, and Ethiopian opal. Each type offers distinct color patterns, from the dark backdrop of black opal to the fiery hues of fire opal.

What shapes can opal gemstones be found in?

Opal gemstones come in shapes like oval, round, pear, cushion, trillion, heart, and emerald-cut, making them versatile for jewelry designs or collections.

What is the price range for opal gemstones?

Prices for opal gemstones range from $10 for smaller or common opals, like white or Ethiopian opals, to over $1000 for rare, high-quality black opals, depending on size, color play, and origin.

Are all opal gemstones in stock?

Yes, all opal gemstones listed are in stock and available for immediate purchase, ensuring fast order processing and delivery.

Is worldwide shipping available for opal gemstones?

Yes, worldwide shipping is offered for all opal gemstones, with secure and reliable delivery options to reach customers globally.

What colors can I expect from opal gemstones?

Opals display a spectrum of colors through their play-of-color, including blue, green, red, orange, and yellow. The specific colors and intensity vary by type, with black opals often showing vivid contrasts and fire opals featuring warm tones.

Are opal gemstones natural or treated?

Most opal gemstones are natural and untreated, showcasing their inherent play-of-color. Some opals, like Ethiopian opals, may be stabilized to enhance durability, and any treatments are disclosed in product details.

Are opal gemstones suitable for jewelry?

Yes, opal gemstones are popular for jewelry like rings, pendants, and earrings, but they require care due to their relative softness (5.5-6.5 on the Mohs scale). They’re best suited for pieces not exposed to heavy wear. GemSelect’s loose opals are ideal for custom designs.

How do I choose the right opal gemstone?

Consider the opal’s play-of-color, type, shape, and intended use. Black opals are prized for their bold color flashes, while fire opals suit vibrant designs. Check clarity and origin for quality, and ensure proper care for longevity.

Why choose GemSelect for opal gemstones?

GemSelect offers a wide range of natural, certified opal gemstones, all in stock with detailed descriptions and competitive prices. With worldwide shipping and a commitment to quality, it’s a trusted source for loose opals.

I was looking for a small gift for a friend- the process is the same as every other time and was very simple, and she even got her gift early! On the downside, there's no way to easily keep track of multiple Shipping Addresses, so if I want to send a gift to Friend A and to Friend B, I have to overwrite everything and it's a fair bit clunky in that regard.
