Exciting New Arrivals

We are always adding new and colorful gems to our collection and this month is no exception. Two of my favorite new gems are the stunning Turquoise and Serpentine.

Untreated Turquoise

Pure, natural turquoise is rare and the color is mostly blue interspersed by brown, dark-grey or black veins, which can be sparse or dense. Due to its relative softness (5-6 on the Mohs scale), turquoise is usually cut en cabochon and best suited for gemstone earrings, pins, brooches, as well as in necklaces and fashionable gemstone pendants. We have recently added some gorgeous, natural untreated Turquoise gems to our stock.

Gem Quality Serpentine

Serpentine exhibits greenish hues and a texture similar to the skin of a snake; it is therefore named from the Latin serpens, meaning 'snake' or 'serpent'. Serpentine is fairly soft (2.5-5.5 on the Mohs scale), so is usually cut as cabochon gemstones, or carved into decorative objects. We are pleased to offer high quality serpentine gems that would look stunning in jewelry designs such as pendants, pins, earrings and brooches.

Customer Questions and Answers:

Question

What is the difference between spectrolite and labradorite?

Answer

Labradorite is known for its remarkable iridescence. This schiller or metallic luster can be seen when light hits the stone from particular angles. Most typically, these metallic tints are violet, blue and green. Some rare specimens of labradorite display a full spectrum of colors, not only violet, blue and green; but also yellow, orange and red. These rare specimens have been given the name spectrolite. The name was introduced by the Finnish geologist Aarne Laitakari (1890-1975), former director of the Geological Survey of Finland. Laitakari's son, Pekka, discovered the first spectrolite deposit at Ylämaa in South-Eastern Finland near the Russian border in 1940. To date, the rare variety called spectrolite has only been found in Finland and the name has been reserved for uniquely colorful spectrolite from the Ylämma region.

Question

What is Spanish Topaz and do you have any?

Answer

Spanish Topaz is a false/misleading term used by some less than honest sellers. This is actually not a Topaz at all, but a Citrine. Gemselect does not sell any gems under this false name.
