Opals are considered one of the most beautiful and alluring of all gemstones. Their fascinating play-of-color phenomenon in which a rainbow of hues dances before your eyes is legendary.
There are many varieties found under the opal umbrella and one of the most interesting is the Chocolate Opal found only in Ethiopia and forged in the ashes of ancient volcanoes.
The finest specimens of Chocolate Opal can display all the colors of the rainbow which contrast dramatically against a creamy brown background.
Like other opals, the varied colors are formed by the internal structure of the gemstone which causes light to bounce around and split into the complete spectrum. The chocolate colored background is a mixture of solidified volcanic debris and clay.
Chocolate Opals are members of the very varied Opal family which also includes such famous names as:
And many, many more!
All opals have gained a prolific reputation over thousands of years for their spiritual powers and have earned such nicknames as 'the eye stone' and "cupid's stone" for their influences.
Just some of the virtues of this gemstone are:
In addition, Chocolate Opals also offer nurturing and grounding encouragement.

Chakras are energy centers which are located around the body and are linked to certain colors.
Chocolate Opals can be the perfect Chakra stone. The play-of-color spectacle can display all colors so can influence all the Chakras. If a particular color is dominant, then this can steer the stone towards helping a certain Chakra – blue helps the Throat Chakra, Green helps the Heart Chakra and so on.
Added to this we have the base host rock which has a light brown color which will link it to the Sacral Chakra and the Root Chakra.

Pricing any opal can be a very tricky business. Of course, it is the color display that determines the price but certain colors such as red and orange are rarer than blue and violet so they can fetch higher values.
Color coverage must also be considered. A gemstone with color spread across the whole surface will be more expensive that a stone with just the odd patch of color.
With Chocolate Opals, like Black Opals and Boulder Opals, a nice contrast between the color and the deep background is also appreciated.
Chocolate Opals can range in price from $20 to $200 per carat although any gemstone above ten carats of top quality can be considerably more expensive.
Most Chocolate Opals are not treated in any way but as the contrast between the precious colored opal material and the chocolate brown background is an important factor in their valuation, there are some gemstones which have been 'smoked' to darken the base stone.
All treatments received by any of our gemstones are clearly disclosed.
British anthropologist, archeologist and naturalist, Louis Leakey, was exploring some caves in Kenya in 1939, when he discovered ancient relics made of opal dating back 6000 years. He said these opals must have been mined in Africa, but where was the source of these opals?
In the 1990s, Mezezo Province in Ethiopia, Kenya's northern neighbor, was discovered to be the world's only source of Chocolate Opals. Since then Black Opals were discovered not too far away in Wollo Province.
Chocolate Opals are only found in one small part of Ethiopia.
Chocolate Opals have a rating of 5.5 to 6.5 on Mohs hardness scale. This makes them a little bit fragile for many types of jewelry items and not suitable for daily wear but pendants and earrings are no problem and a ring with a protective setting would make a very unique piece.
Chocolate Opals are the birthstone of October and would make an ideal gift for anyone who has a birthday in that month.
A Chocolate Opal is the traditional gemstone gift for the 14th wedding anniversary.

Gem Selects is a great place to buy loose gems and seems to have a wide selection of sizes, shapes, and color as well as reasonable prices. Though I only dabble in making earrings this is my purchase from here and I love the pieces I have bought - 6 pairs of various gems. I am sure I'll be back.

Just browsing for a stone. Best selection around. Thanks!

Everything was right there - The site provided the exact minerals I was looking for. The search for items filtered easily, with results showing pictures of exactly what I bought, at reasonable prices. It doesn't get any better than this. Well, the shipping charges could have been lower, but they weren't outrageous.

I have purchased several times from GemSelect and am always pleased with the stones. The information on the site about each stone is thorough. I don't have to worry about fake stones from them and the prices are quite reasonable. I love the new cards provided for each stone. I would highly recommend them.

Good: Your reputation of selling quality trusted gems is what encouraged me to buy from you in the first place. Without it, I would not have bought anything. I intend to test everything with a gem tester, but also will get privately appraised.Bad: My only gripe is the labs you use aren't the best. They're not very well known, and not readily accepted by the buying market in my opinion. Pending my gemologist appraisals, we'll see how well your assessment aligns with trusted IGS accredited appraisals.

I was looking for a gemstone called Sphene/Titanite and found it on GemSelect. They had many gems to choose from and had good prices. I received my order a little later than expected but given that it's coming from overseas I wasn't too worried. The 2 gems I received are beautiful. I have to say that I have no gem knowledge- I am a novice and I ordered the Sphene for healing purposes, so I am hoping they are real. I have no way of confirming if that is true. But they are beautiful!
