Newsletter June 2021

Good grief it is June already! The perfect time to remind you of our article on Summer gemstones where we discuss a selection of perfect gemstones for the upcoming picnics and BBQs on the long sunny days of summer.

We haven’t forgotten our friends in the southern hemisphere and have an equally interesting article on the best gemstones for the frosty days of winter.

I had a couple of paragraphs all ready to post about our fantastic new arrivals of blue spinel only to find that they have been sold already! We only have two examples showing online but I have been promised more will be photographed and catalogued very soon.

Keep an eye out for these stones as all natural untreated blue gemstones are very rare indeed and with their excellent durability and great clarity spinel are an exceptional opportunity. If you get the chance to buy one or two take it – at these prices you cannot go wrong.

Speaking of color, we have a regular customer who has passed on a great tip for buying colored gemstones. Over time he has bought a number of gemstones from us and has calibrated the colors on his computer monitor to match the stones he receives. That way when he looks at our gemstone photographs he knows exactly what he is getting as far as color goes.

No two people will see the same color in exactly the same way but a color adjusted monitor will at least mean you are seeing the same colors and brightness as those in our photographs.

Of course we have a guaranteed return policy if you are not completely satisfied but this can save a lot of time and bother.

June has a couple of very interesting and historic gems as birthstones that are both well worth checking out – pearls and moonstones. Both have an exquisite almost otherworldly appearance and a great spiritual connection to feminine energy. Any wife, mother or daughter celebrating a birthday in June would absolutely love either one of these gemstones although, since Harry Styles starting wearing a pearl necklace recently, more and more men are wearing them too!

Our neighboring country of Myanmar is going through upheaval once again – an unfortunately recurring event – and our hearts go out to the long suffering inhabitants of that fine nation. The US government has not issued blanket sanctions on Myanmar gemstones as it has in the past as this often only hurts the little guys on the rock face as it were.

However it has blacklisted certain companies with links to the military junta. Rest assured we do not buy or trade with any of the listed companies presently, in the past or in the future. We will continue to work with trusted miners and dealers who have suffered under various regimes over the recent decades.

I moved to England in 1975 and soon after experienced my first Grand National horse race. It seemed the whole country was betting on the outcome and my Nan put a pound each way on a horse of my choosing. I had just begun learning French – something we did not do in sunny South Africa – so the name, L’Escargot stood out as a winner for me.

We all sat round the living room watching the race Saturday afternoon, each cheering on our picks but I had a unfair advantage – my lucky Tiger’s Eye gemstone all the way from the banks of the Orange River clutched in my hand. It was no surprise when L’Escargot romped home for the win and I got £3.25 – a fortune to a ten year old in those days.

Risking the wrath of bookies around the world we have a new article on lucky gemstones which is certainly well worth a read.

We love getting questions from you guys and this week we have a couple of crackers:

Question

What is the difference between a Colombian and Zambian Emerald?

Answer

Emeralds are found in a number of different regions around the world, but the most abundant mines are in Colombia and Zambia. Colombian emeralds usually have a purer, leafy green color which mainly comes from the presence of chromium. Zambian emeralds often have a vivid green bluish color, which is caused by a smaller amount of vanadium and a presence of iron. Colombian emeralds tend to have larger number of inclusions and be less transparent compared to Zambian emeralds due to the composition of the gems.

Question

Is it true that only a Diamond can scratch glass?

Answer

This is a myth that is completely false. Any gemstone equal to, or greater than, the hardness of glass, which has a rating of 4 to 7 on Mohs scale, will also scratch it. Some examples are tourmaline, topaz, garnet, sapphire and others. We can highly recommend our Gemstone Hardness guide here - Gemstones Hardness Explained
