Andalusite

Andalusite is not a very well known gemstone and before the recent discoveries in Brazil and Sri Lanka it was rarely seen outside of a gemologist's collection.

Now everyone can enjoy the earthy autumnal hues of this clear and bright gemstone which can show various colors as it moves from one angle to another.

Andalusite Colors

The first thing you will think of when you see a fine cut Andalusite will be autumn (or fall depending where you come from). The shades of orange, yellow, brown, red and gold seem to have been taken directly from a New England picture postcard and the rustic, natural colors are warming and comforting.

As Andalusite gemstones are moved from one angle to another, they can appear to change color quite dramatically in a phenomenon called pleochroism.

Andalusite Species

Andalusite is a fairly straightforward aluminum silicate mineral which was misleadingly named since it was not first found in the Spanish province of Andalusia but much further north.

Its only real peculiarity for geologists is that it is a polymorph with two other gemstones - kyanite and sillimanite. Polymorph means that they share the same chemical make-up and ingredients but have a different crystal structure.

What are the spiritual benefits of Andalusite?

Andalusite has a limited profile for its spiritual powers but it has picked up the nickname of 'the Seeing Stone' for its help in self-reflection and understanding your true personality.

This gemstone's other strengths include:

  • Protection from Psychic Attack
  • Rational Thought
  • Avoiding Confrontation
  • Assists Scrying Sessions

Andalusite and the Chakras

Chakras are various energy centers situated around the body which can influence our physical and mental well-being. Each Chakra has a designated color and gemstones of a similar color can help unblock or realign a troubled Chakra.

Most Andalusite gemstones are found in earthy brown tones with hints of green and yellow. This can mean they are able to assist with a number of Chakras. I would say they are most beneficial to the Root Chakra but any Andalusite with strong orange tones can help with the Sacral Chakra and a more yellow stone will aid the Solar Plexus Chakra.

Andalusite Price

The color of your Andalusite gemstone will play a major part of its value but there are a couple of other factors to consider. Most Andalusite tend to be a greenish brown color but any stones which have flashes of orange, pink or red as they are turned from angle to angle will be very prized.

This switch of color is known as pleochroism and must be taken into consideration when being cut. A highly skilled cutter will be able show off Andalusite's amazing ability to switch from color to color and show two or three colors at the same time.

Carat Weight

Most Andalusite gemstones are quite small, with anything over a carat being quite rare and a clear specimen approaching five carats or more would be a very valuable gemstone indeed.

For this reason, larger Andalusite gemstones rise in price per carat quite quickly as soon as they get over 1 carat in weight. Gemstones less than a carat will be $20 - $100 per carat while those larger than a carat in weight will be $50 - $300 per carat.

Treatments

Andalusite is not known to be regularly enhanced by treatments other than the cutting and polishing into lovely gemstones.

Andalusite History

Andalusite does not have a particularly interesting history and does not feature in any famous jewelry collections. The only engaging story that I can find out about it is that famous French mineralogist, Jean-Claude Delametherie gave the newly-discovered gemstone its name because he thought it had been found in the Spanish province of Andalusia when in fact it was found in Guadalajara.

Mind you, imagine if he was better at geography - I would be writing about guadalajarite instead!

Where are Andalusite found?

Andalusite can still be found in Spain but most gemstone quality material is now mined in Brazil and Sri Lanka as well as a few sources in Australia, South Africa and the Inyo Mountains of California in the US.

What jewelry is Andalusite suitable for?

Andalusite is rated at 7.5 on Mohs hardness scale which makes it durable enough to be used in all types of jewelry, including daily wear items.

Andalusite is usually found in small carat sizes so bracelets and necklaces are a good idea as are multi-stone rings or brooches. The earthy colors have made them a favorite for men's jewelry designs.

Ive been shopping here many times before, so navigating around was easy. I am accustomed to the quality of the items and that's the main reason I come here. When I need non heated stones I know I can count on GemSelect being authentic. I trust them because I double check their quality. And never had problems with them. And yes I do recommend shopping there to some of my clients who are "less knowledgable" of industry. GemSelect is so user friendly they're great for beginner gem shoppers!

I do wish for higher res pics but I get it. The gems I bought are cheap that may have been the reason for the relatively low res pics.

Everything was well labeled and organized, lots of information for each product that lets you know it's legitimate. Huge selection, almost too easy to check out, I'll have to pay rent in rocks lol.

Have always had a fascination with gemstones, and was looking for a good piece of labradorite. this site had a huge selection, and it was really hard to choose from, they also had a lot of gemstones you don't normally see, or are very hard to find. would totally use them if you're looking for pieces for jewelery.

Size and Weight

Gems are always measured in Millimeter (mm)

Dimensions are given as;
length x width x depth,
except for round stones which are;
diameter x depth

Select gems by size, not by weight!
Gem varieties vary in density, so carat weight is not a good indication of size

Note: 1ct = 0.2g
