Rhodolite Garnet

The garnet family features a number of very fine gemstones including the Rhodolite Garnet which is a very versatile stone with the colors of a ruby at a fraction of the price.

Rhodolite Garnet Colors

Rhodolite Garnets are described as raspberry-red or purplish-red and their name comes from the Greek 'rhodon' meaning rose which hints at the pinkish tints that can also be found in this lovely gemstone.

Rhodolite Garnet Species

The garnet family is made up of a wide array of gemstones all linked by a similar crystal structure and mineral composition. Two of the reddish varieties, pyrope and almandine, combine to produce Rhodolite Garnets.

What are the spiritual benefits of Rhodolite Garnet?

Rhodolite Garnets contain all the innate spiritual benefits that garnets possess, including:

  • Detoxifying and Purifying
  • Improves Sexuality
  • Protective and Healing
  • Grounding and Energizing

As a 'Stone of Health', Rhodolite Garnets are a very powerful therapeutic aid.

Rhodolite Garnet and the Chakras

According to ancient Hindu beliefs, the Chakras are energy centers located around the body which can influence us both emotionally and physically.

Each Chakra has a designated color and, as a predominantly reddish gemstone, Rhodolite will be most effective for the Root Chakra which deals with feelings of security and stability.

If the Rhodolite has a definite pink tint then it will be more linked to the Heart Chakra which is concerned with love, compassion and emotional development.

Rhodolite Garnet Price

All colored gemstones, with a few exceptions, are priced primarily on their color. Only when we have the color in order will we consider the clarity, cut and size.

For Rhodolite Garnets the most valuable color will be a strong pinkish red color although red colors leaning toward purple are also much sought after. Look out for intensely saturated gemstones without any brown tones to get top value.

Carat Weight

Finding very large Rhodolite Garnets with excellent color and good clarity is not easy so as the stones get bigger the price per carat rises quickly.

A fine quality Rhodolite under a carat will reach around $20 - $50 per carat while a gemstone of high quality which weighs well over 2 carats could reach $200 per carat.

Treatments

Rhodolite gemstones, like almost all garnets, are not known to be treated in any way to improve their appearance other than the usual cutting and polishing - they are completely natural.

Rhodolite Garnet History

Varieties of garnets have been known to us for thousands of years, but Rhodolite has a much more recent and defined history.

Red garnets have been famous for centuries and, like any hard red stone, were often considered rubies before the scientists could look deeply into their crystal structure and mineral composition.

One such scientist was William Hidden, the mineralogist from Rhode Island, after whom Hiddenite is named. Mr. Hidden discovered deposits of Rhodolite in North Carolina back in the late 1890s and determined it to be a mix of almandine and pyrope.

Rhodolite is not an officially recognized mineralogical term but is commonly used in the gem trade and was named after the North Carolina pink rhododendron.

Where are Rhodolite Garnets found?

Rhodolite Garnet deposits occur in Brazil, Burma (Myanmar), Madagascar, Mozambique, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Tanzania and the USA.

What jewelry is Rhodolite Garnet suitable for?

Rhodolite Garnets are rated between 6.5 and 7.5 on Mohs hardness scale and can be used in all types of jewelry items including daily wear items.

Larger, more expensive gemstones, might want to have protective settings in rings as they are more likely to be bumped or knocked.

Birthstones and Anniversaries

Rhodolite Garnet is an official birthstone for the month of January and would make a great gift for anyone who has a birthday then.

Rhodolite Garnet is a traditional gemstone to help celebrate the 2nd wedding anniversary.

I have ordered from Gem Select before. I was trying to order again but did not find a good selection of rubelitte. I ended up ordering from another company. I told a lot of my clients about your wide selection of amethyst. They could not believe it. These clients have been with me forever. The stones I am buying are for them. They will NEVER believe I went out and bought them stones like this. It would not be possible without you. StarLanka did not have a good selection of amethyst. I guess different companies carry different things A?A,A?A?A?A,A?A 3/4 A?a'A?'A?A,A?

Size and Weight

Gems are always measured in Millimeter (mm)

Dimensions are given as;
length x width x depth,
except for round stones which are;
diameter x depth

Select gems by size, not by weight!
Gem varieties vary in density, so carat weight is not a good indication of size

Note: 1ct = 0.2g
