Morganite

Although it is relatively little known, Morganite is part of a very famous family - Beryl - which also includes prestigious Emerald and Aquamarine gemstones.

Pastel colored gemstones are particularly popular at the moment - especially for engagement rings - and the light tones and excellent durability of Morganite make it an ideal option.

Morganite Colors

Morganite is generally thought to be a pink gemstone but its color can range from very delicate blush colors all the way to a bubblegum pink. In between, we can find lilac, peach, salmon and violet colors but they are all what we would describe as pastel.

The cause of the color is thought to be trace elements of manganese although caesium could also be the reason.

Morganite can change color quite dramatically when turned from one angle to another in a phenomenon known as pleochroism. A skilled craftsman will cut the gemstone so that the Morganite displays its strongest shade of pink from the top.

Morganite Species

Morganite is a type of beryl, a famous gemstone type which also includes emerald, aquamarine, golden beryl, goshenite and bixbite. These are usually identified by the color - emerald is green, aquamarine is blue, morganite is pink and so on.

Look out for anyone describing Morganite as 'Pink Emerald' as it is an old and underhand trick.

What are the spiritual benefits of Morganite?

Morganite's romantic pink color points the way to its spiritual strengths - everything to do with love and romance.

Its other virtues include:

  • Helsp Overcome Fear and Anger
  • Allows Acceptance
  • Opens the Heart
  • Deepens Relationships

Morganite and the Chakras

The Chakras are energy centers located around the body which can influence our physical and emotional well-being. Each Chakra has an associated color and a gemstone of a similar color can help unblock or realign a troubled Chakra.

Although pink is not one of the colors that usually represent the Chakras it has become synonymous with the Heart Chakra (Green) probably to do with pink being the color of love, romance and empathy. As a perfect embodiment of pink, Morganite is an ideal Heart Chakra stone.

Morganite Price

Morganite gemstones, like most colored stones, are priced according to the strength of its color. The pastel colors found in Morganite are very trendy right now but the color must not be too washed out. The purer the pink and the more saturated or intense the color, the better.

Pink is certainly the most sought after color in Morganite but gemstones with a violet or salmon or even orange undertone are also appreciated and all a matter of personal preference.

Carat Weight

It is the color of Morganite that sets the price - assuming it has high standards of clarity and a skilled cut - and they do not get more expensive per carat as they get bigger as some other gemstones can.

The majority of fine Morganite gemstones will fall in the range of between $100 and $250 per carat no matter the carat weight.

Treatments

Morganite is often found totally unheated or unenhanced other than the usual cutting and polishing. Some can be heated at relatively low temperatures to get rid of the unwanted yellow tones.

Any enhancing treatments our gemstones receive will be fully disclosed on our product pages.

Morganite History

Morganite has a short history as far as gemstones go. It was first identified in Madagascar in 1910 or 1911 and was referred to as 'Pink Beryl'.

Shortly afterwards the famous gemologist and vice-president of Tiffany's, George Kunz, suggested that it should be renamed Morganite after the famous banker and philanthropist, JP Morgan. JP Morgan was the inspiration behind the character featured on the Monopoly board game!

Where is Morganite found?

Morganite deposits are found in Afghanistan, Brazil, China, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Zimbabwe and the USA.

What jewelry is Morganite suitable for?

Morganite is rated at very durable 7.5 - 8 on Mohs hardness scale which makes it suitable for all jewelry items including daily wear pieces such as engagement rings.

The romantic pastel pink hues have made Morganite the second most popular colored gemstone choice for an engagement ring after sapphires but the variety of sizes and shapes available mean it can be used in all sorts of jewelry styles.

Size and Weight

Gems are always measured in Millimeter (mm)

Dimensions are given as;
length x width x depth,
except for round stones which are;
diameter x depth

Select gems by size, not by weight!
Gem varieties vary in density, so carat weight is not a good indication of size

Note: 1ct = 0.2g
