Scolecite is a mineral member of the zeolite group that gets its name from the Greek word for "worm" because of the way that the borax bead that contains the mineral sometimes curls when heated by a blowpipe. Scolecite possesses pyro- and piezoelectric properties. Enormous scolecite crystals have been found in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. For gemstone use, faceted scolecite is rare.
