Agate is one of our oldest friends in the gemstone world - it has been used for jewelry, as an official seal and in spiritual rituals for thousands of years.
Agates can be found in all sorts of colors including blue, red, lilac, pink and yellow as well as a variety of interesting patterns, stripes and bands.

Agate is a type of banded chalcedony which in turn is a kind of quartz.
There are many varieties found in agate, usually determined by the color or pattern such as:
Agate is a very moderately priced gemstone that will usually just be a few dollars a carat for even the finest examples although some particularly iridescent Fire Agates can reach $50 per carat.
The brightest and most vivid colors combined with clear and interesting patterns are what really determines the price.
Agates can be found in carat sizes that range from just a carat or two all the way to 20 or 30 carats or even bigger. These can be made into some very interesting and unique jewelry items such as pendants or brooches.
Once again, even these large size stone are very reasonably priced at less than a dollar per carat.
For more details please refer to our full Agate Info page here
Most agates with the interesting colors and patterns are completely untreated other than the cutting and polishing but the smooth single color examples such as green or yellow agate are often dyed to create the desired even coloring.
This dyeing is a safe and approved treatment which does not wash away or fade.
The most popular source of agates in modern times depends on the type - Fire Agate from Mexico, Moss Agate from Brazil, Dentritic Agate from Australia, green Agate from India and so on.
Agate is rated at 7 on Mohs hardness scale which makes it tough enough for all jewelry items including daily wear pieces.
The regular green and yellow stones are perfect for simple jewelry designs, especially for home made items while the larger gemstones with interesting patterns are excellent for one-off pieces.
Agate is a mystical birthstone for September. It would make a great gift for someone you know who has a birthday in this month.
Agate can be a gemstone gift for the 12th and 14th wedding anniversaries.

found what looks to be an incredible boulder opal on gemselect.com. Also got a bit carried away and bought more gems than anticipated. It's expensive to pay for these stones in this way, but the convenience makes it worthwhile.

I was in the market for a replacement gemstone for a solitaire ring that I recently purchased. I was delighted to locate GemSelect as an option for the replacement gem. They have an impressive selection of gemstones! I ordered a citrine trillion cut gemstone. The pictures of the gemstones appear accurate in terms of color and size . The prices are appropriate for the quality of stones I've received. I will continue to shop with GemSelect and will recommend them to anyone in the market for gemstones.
