FAQs

What is black star sapphire?

A black star sapphire is a unique gemstone known for its captivating asterism, a star-like pattern that appears on the surface when exposed to light. These rare black star sapphires are highly sought after for their distinct beauty and durability.

What causes the star effect in black star sapphires?

The star effect, or asterism, in black star sapphires is caused by the reflection of light on needle-like inclusions within the stone. These inclusions are typically made of rutile, creating the stunning star pattern seen in loose star sapphires.

Are loose black star sapphires suitable for jewelry?

Yes, loose black star sapphires are perfect for creating custom jewelry pieces, such as rings, pendants, and earrings. Their durability, with a Mohs hardness of 9, makes them an excellent choice for everyday wear.

What is the difference between a black star sapphire and a regular sapphire?

While both are varieties of sapphire, black star sapphires exhibit asterism, which sets them apart. Regular sapphires, such as blue or pink sapphires, lack this unique star-like effect found in loose black star sapphires.

How do I choose a loose black star sapphire?

When selecting a loose black star sapphire, consider the clarity, carat weight, and prominence of the star effect. Rare black star sapphires with a distinct six-rayed star pattern are particularly valuable.

Are black star sapphires natural?

Most black star sapphires are natural and untreated, but some may undergo enhancements to improve their appearance. Always purchase from a trusted source to ensure the authenticity of loose black star sapphires.

How much do black star sapphires cost?

The price of black star sapphires varies based on their size, quality, and rarity. Loose black star sapphires with a strong, well-defined asterism and higher carat weight typically command higher prices.

Can I buy loose black star sapphires in bulk?

Yes, many gemstone suppliers offer wholesale options for loose black star sapphires. This is a great choice for jewelers or collectors looking to purchase multiple high-quality loose gemstones.

Where can I find rare black star sapphires?

Rare black star sapphires are available through reputable gemstone retailers, both online and in-store. Look for detailed descriptions, certifications, and images when shopping for loose star sapphires.

Are loose star sapphires good for investment?

Loose star sapphires, especially rare black star sapphires with exceptional asterism, can be a great investment. Their rarity and timeless appeal make them a valuable addition to any gemstone collection.

I was looking for a site with every type of gem I could want for setting in luxury blades and assumed I would need to look outside the US, but GemSelect made it easy to get everything I wanted without leaving the house! Wide enough selection that I do not feel the need to look elsewhere and pricing the same.

I found what I was looking for...had to look up millimeters to inches. It would be nice to see something, like a quarter, in the pix to show relative size. I plan on buy loose gemstones for every month in the calendar

I've made several purchases through GemSelect in the past, although not within the last six months. Their gems are always beautiful and I have never had an issue with their prices or their stones. Even when I'm not buying, I love scrolling through their website, which is very user friendly. I especially appreciate being able to change the listing order to your own liking, such as most to least expensive, largest to smallest, etc. As with most online orders, however, I think the shipping charges are not commensurate with the actual weight of the items shipped.

I love Gem Select! When you order what you see is what you get. As soon as you make payment that particular gem is taken off the photo album. That way the one you select is a one of that kind.
