April Newsletter - Covid-19 the World's worst Pandemic

Gemstones may not be your first concern during these very troubling times as Covid-19 circles the world causing panic and havoc wherever it goes. However it is very important that business tries to continue as best it can.

At the moment we are told that postal services are continuing as per normal (Italian Post experiencing delays but Fedex in Italy working as usual) and the CDC in the US says there is likely a very low risk that Covid-19 can be spread from products and packages.

The United States Postal Service said there’s currently no evidence COVID-19 is being spread through the mail, pointing to guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the World Health Organization and the Surgeon General.

Our offices are located in a relatively quiet area in Eastern Thailand where there is very little tourism and so far there has been very little interruption to our day to day lives but we are taking all necessary precautions.

We are still well stocked with gemstones and have a skeleton staff at the moment so we can continue to provide a comprehensive service to satisfy your needs.

If you have any questions about deliveries please do not hesitate to contact us.

(We will keep you updated as we receive more information about deliveries.)

It is important to follow all the advice from your local health authorities, stay indoors as much as possible, keep washing your hands and try to stay calm.

Absolutely nothing can beat the sensible advice from medical experts but many of us believe in the powers of gemstones to help us through some bad times both physical and emotional.

I have collected together the names of a few gemstones best suited to help us in these desperately worrying times.

For anxiety and solitude, I suggest Malachite, as it brings a sense of calm and peace, or Rose Quartz which also calms emotions and takes away the feelings of loneliness and despair.

The best gemstones for the lungs and respiratory system are Jasper as it detoxifies the lungs and Carnelian which is good for both lungs and the throat.

To give your immune system a boost, try Amethyst which is also great for cleansing the system and dealing with stress, or Bloodstone which is known for its benefits to circulation and in combating colds and flu.

The Chakra which most influences the lungs is the Heart Chakra and the best gemstone for this Chakra is Rose Quartz which is good for thymus and heart as well. The Root Chakra affects the body’s immune system so we would suggest Obsidian as it works well for the lower Chakras.

Even if you are not sure about the spiritual benefits of crystals a beautiful gemstone can certainly work as a great pick-me-up.

Anyway everybody please stay safe, help each other and be positive from all of us here at GemSelect

PS none of our products go through China

Customer Questions

Every month we answer questions of general interest from our customers. Please feel free to send your questions or suggestions to our support team at help@gemselect.com

Question

Should I be worried about coronavirus on my gems, and do you have any tips on how to clean them?

Answer

While it is not certain how long the virus that causes COVID-19 survives on surfaces such as gemstones, studies suggest that coronaviruses may persist on surfaces for a few hours or up to several days. Gemstones can be safely, simply, and effectively cleaned with warm soapy water and a soft brush, such as a toothbrush. Let your gem soak for a few moments in a solution of warm water and mild detergent or cleaning solution. Then use a soft brush to gently scrub your gem. We would recommend against using alcohol as this could be destructive to some gem types.

Question

Where does the name Spectrolite come from?

Answer

An uncommon variety of labradorite, Spectrolite was initially a trade name for any of this material that was mined in Finland. Due to its vivid iridescence and full spectrum of colors, Finnish geologist, Aarne Laitakari, used the prefix spectro-, from the Latin spectrum (appearance, image, or apparition), and the Latin suffix –lite, from lithos (stone), to coin this brand name in 1940.
