Fire Agate is like an odd uncle in the Agate family of gemstones. While most agates are neat little cabochon cut gemstones with subtle colors and regular banding, Fire Agate hits you with crazy iridescence and curious bulges.
Fire Agate Colors
Fire Agates tend to have dark brown to almost black bodies upon which a iridescent display of colors such as red, gold, green and blue can dance and dazzle.
The base color is due to the presence of iron and the iridescence is the result of light travelling through microscopically thin layers of alternating silica and iron. White light bounces this way and that before breaking up into individual colors like a prism.

Fire Agate Carat Weight
Fire Agates have a strange composition which is often technically described as botryoidal which means it is shaped like a bunch of grapes. Of course this makes cutting and polishing quite tricky and finding calibrated or regular sized Fire Agates almost impossible.
Cutters will attempt to display as much iridescence as they can and make the carat weight as heavy as possible. Small stones do not show off the color display as well as bigger sizes so, in general, the price of Fire Agate is totally dependent on its colors and not carat weight.
With such a variable gemstone it is difficult to pin down a per carat price but the average price for a reasonable looking Fire Agate will be around $10 - $15 per carat and only exceptional stones will reach the top $50 per carat limit.
