Golden Beryl

The beryl family contains such illustrious members as emerald, aquamarine and morganite, and the lesser known Golden Beryl is a truly gorgeous yet more affordable cousin. Golden Beryl has excellent clarity, a great sparkle and a durability to make it perfect for all types of jewelry.

Golden Beryl Colors

The beryl family are generally separated by their colors - green for emerald, blue for aquamarine and so on. With its name being Golden Beryl, it is not difficult to guess its color! This golden hue will range from a vivid lemon-lime to a deep warm dandelion yellow.

Golden Beryl gets its golden hues from the presence of iron during formation.

Heliodor is another member of the beryl family with a similar yellow coloration to Golden Beryl and the name was created to describe yellow beryl from Namibia. Heliodor tends to be much lighter, almost washed out, yellows rather than the deep colors found in Golden Beryl and I suggest ignoring the name and just look at the color when choosing a gemstone.

Golden Beryl Species

Beryl is one of the most valuable and interesting gem types in the world and includes one of the premier gemstones - the emerald - in its family. Their colors include just about the entire rainbow with only violet or purple missing that I can think of.

To go along with the deep yellow colors of Golden Beryl we have:

  • Aquamarine - The blue/green variety
  • Emerald - The deep green variety
  • Goshenite - The colorless variety
  • Heliodor - A yellow variety
  • Morganite - The pink variety
  • Red Beryl - The red variety, sometimes known as 'bixbite'

The causes of the different colors can be iron, chromium, manganese and vanadium either individually or in various combinations.

What are the spiritual benefits of Golden Beryl?

Golden Beryl is known as a ‘stone of the sun’ and brings all of its energy and motivation.

Its other virtues include:

  • Happiness, Optimism and Enthusiasm
  • Confidence and Self-trust
  • Protection from Negativity
  • Helps deal with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

Golden Beryl and the Chakras

The Chakras are points of energy located around the body which can influence our physical and emotional well-being. Each Chakra is linked to a color and a gemstone of a similar hue can help unblock or realign a troubled Chakra.

Since it is usually found in warm yellow colors, Golden Beryl is linked to the Solar Plexus Chakra which assists with issues such as the immune system and digestion or a lack of motivation and listlessness.

Golden Beryl Price

Despite sharing all the attributes of its sister gemstones, emerald, aquamarine and so on, such as great durability and gorgeous color, Golden Beryl is a very reasonably priced gem.

The most sought after colors are the deep golden shades so they will command a higher price than the lighter yellows. Golden Beryls are known for their excellent clarity - unlike the often included emerald - so do not settle for any gemstones with obvious internal flaws.

Carat Weight

Color and clarity set the price for Golden Beryl but large carat weight stones are quite difficult to come by so the price will increase per carat as the stones get bigger.

For example, a fine quality Golden Beryl that weighs between 1 and 5 carats will in price from $20 per carat and may reach $80 per carat for exceptional pieces. However, if the gemstone exceeds 5 carats in weight, the price can jump quite a bit to up to a few hundred dollars per carat for really top quality.

Treatments

Golden Beryl is not regularly treated with heat or radiation to improve the color. We have heard of Golden Beryl being turned into aquamarine with heat treatment but rest assured we will inform you of any treatment our gemstones may receive.

Golden Beryl History

Golden Beryl was certainly used in the dim and distant past but most references to Beryl just said ‘Beryl’ so we have no idea which variety was meant. In addition, yellow stones like Golden Beryl were quite interchangeable, so topaz, citrine, peridot could easily have been mixed up with this example of beryl.

Large deposits of Golden Beryl were discovered by German colonialists in Namibia in 1913. Some were sent back to Germany where the gemstones were christened Heliodor and turned into an exquisite jewelry set for Kaiser Wilhelm.

A new star seemed to have arrived when unfortunately WW1 broke out and by the time the hostilities had ceased everyone had forgotten about Golden Beryl/Heliodor. Now it is ready for its comeback.

Where is Golden Beryl found?

Golden Beryl is still found in Namibia and neighboring southern African nations as well as Brazil, Madagascar and Russia.

What jewelry is Golden Beryl suitable for?

Golden Beryl is rated at very durable 7.5 - 8 on Mohs hardness scale which makes it suitable for all jewelry items including daily wear pieces such as engagement rings.

The lovely color, variety of cuts and shapes, excellent clarity and sparkle of Golden Beryl make it a great choice for matching jewelry sets - you will find suitable gemstones in a range of sizes for all items such as rings, bracelets, necklaces, earrings, even pendants and brooches.

Size and Weight

Gems are always measured in Millimeter (mm)

Dimensions are given as;
length x width x depth,
except for round stones which are;
diameter x depth

Select gems by size, not by weight!
Gem varieties vary in density, so carat weight is not a good indication of size

Note: 1ct = 0.2g
