Fire AgateWelcome to our online display of fine natural Fire Agate for Sale. Fire Agate stones are unique in many ways; mostly the odd shapes it is found in and cut. Of course, this makes it a perfect candidate for any jewelry designer looking for the most weird shape and color combination in a gemstone. At GemSelect we sell the exact gemstone you will see on our website, no stock photos are used. Considering the uniqueness of Fire Agate, it is actually very affordable for a rare gemstone. |
Fire Agate is like an odd uncle in the Agate family of gemstones. While most agates are neat little cabochon cut gemstones with subtle colors and regular banding, Fire Agate hits you with crazy iridescence and curious bulges.
Fire Agates tend to have dark brown to almost black bodies upon which a iridescent display of colors such as red, gold, green and blue can dance and dazzle.
The base color is due to the presence of iron and the iridescence is the result of light travelling through microscopically thin layers of alternating silica and iron. White light bounces this way and that before breaking up into individual colors like a prism.

Fire Agate is a type of chalcedony which in turn is a kind of quartz.
There are many varieties found in agate, usually determined by the color or pattern such as:
Fire Agate is made special by its unique layered composition. During formation over the course of millions of years, volcanic activity heated various minerals including iron and silica. A thin layer of iron oxide would form then a translucent layer of silica followed by another layer of iron oxide and so on. This layered composition allows for the optical effect of iridescence or the 'Schiller Effect' to occur.
The price of Fire Agate depends on a few factors which are mostly based on color:
Fire Agates tend to come in odd shapes because of its natural botryoidal composition and because cutters will try to get as much of the colorful iridescence into the gemstone as possible. Which of the strange outlines appeals the most is up to you.
Fire Agates have a strange composition which is often technically described as botryoidal which means it is shaped like a bunch of grapes. Of course this makes cutting and polishing quite tricky and finding calibrated or regular sized Fire Agates almost impossible.
Cutters will attempt to display as much iridescence as they can and make the carat weight as heavy as possible. Small stones do not show off the color display as well as bigger sizes so, in general, the price of Fire Agate is totally dependent on its colors and not carat weight.
With such a variable gemstone it is difficult to pin down a per carat price but the average price for a reasonable looking Fire Agate will be around $10 - $15 per carat and only exceptional stones will reach the top $50 per carat limit.

Fire agate is not known to be treated or enhanced in any way.
So far there is only one area in the world where we can find a regular supply of Fire Agate - the south western parts of the USA and in northern Mexico.
Fire Agate is rated at 7 on Mohs hardness scale which makes them suitable for all jewelry items including daily wear pieces.
The odd shapes and fascinating color display make them an ideal gemstone for anyone looking for unique one-off items and the deep colors also make them ideal for men's jewelry.
