Spinel Meaning and Healing Powers

Spinel Meaning and Uses
Natural Spinel

Introduction to Spinel

For thousands of years, any red gemstone, valued for its beauty and used for jewelry or spiritual powers was called a ruby. At the time, this included such crystals as tourmalines, garnets and spinels.

As gemologists became more and more sophisticated, they were able to identify and separate these gemstones into different varieties but it does mean that ruby is the name associated with all the myths, legends and magical powers of the past.

Spinel has a long history as a sought after gemstone, even if it was misnamed as a ruby, and can be found in many of the jewelry collections of royal families across Europe and Asia.

Unfortunately sorting out this somewhat neglected gemstone’s heritage of positive physical and emotional effects is quite tricky and, like its position below ruby in jewelry, very unfair.

  • Blue - Calming and Soothing
  • Green - Renewal and Energy
  • Orange - Joy and Creativity
  • Grey - Cool and Balanced

The Emotional and Spiritual Benefits of Spinel

Spinel is a healing gemstone that promotes optimism, instilling a sense of happiness and gratitude for life's blessings. It possesses revitalizing and re-energizing properties, effectively dispelling feelings of anxiety and encouraging a positive outlook towards future endeavors. This gemstone also imparts a strong sense of determination and tenacity, empowering individuals to overcome challenging times and navigate difficult situations.

Furthermore, it enhances creativity and boosts confidence, fostering a healing environment for personal growth and self-expression.

The Physical Benefits of Spinel

Spinel is a great gemstone for joints, muscles and bones, especially the lower spine, as well as teeth and gums. It will give you extra energy, strength and endurance notably during times when you may be recovering from a long illness or trauma of some kind.

Physical Bnefits of Gemstones

Different colors of spinel are believed to possess healing properties. For instance, orange spinel is thought to assist in addressing fertility issues for both men and women. On the other hand, blue to violet spinels are believed to provide relief for ailments such as headaches, migraines, sore throats, and stiff necks, offering potential healing benefits in these areas.

All spinels are good for detoxification and regulating the metabolism.

Spinel and the Chakras

As is comes in so many colors, Spinel is the almost perfect Chakra gemstone - there is always a spinel to match the color of any blocked Chakra.

Chakra meditation

Hindu and Buddhist philosophy, stretching back thousands of years, says that we all have seven vital points in our bodies which influence our physical and mental well being. These points are called Chakras (meaning wheel or spin) and are centers of energy that begin at the base of the spine and end at the top of the head.

Each Chakra has an associated color and when a Chakra is blocked or gets out of alignment it can be tended to by the correct colored gemstone.

Can Spinel unblock Chakras?

It certainly can - and since it can appear in almost any color, spinel can unblock any or all the Chakras! Our diagram above shows which colors affect which Chakra so you can see, for example, that a purple spinel could be used to unblock a troubled Crown Chakra while a red spinel would be better for the Root Chakra.

Black is one of the more unusual colors in the gems world but spinel has some lovely large and relatively inexpensive specimens. Black spinels can be used to unblock the Root Chakra, linked to your sense of independence, grounding, security and survival.

Because of its uncommon variety of colors, spinel can help with the overall flow of energy within the Chakra system as a whole and it has been said it can aid in the stimulation of Kundalini awakening.

To use a spinel for healing treatment, find yourself a quite spot to lie down with the gemstone placed on the location of the troubled Chakra point. Breathe calmly and relax and let the gemstone do its work.

Is Spinel a Birthstone?

Yes, Spinel is one of the official birthstones for the month of August.

Spinel is also the traditional gift for the 22nd wedding anniversary.

Spinel and the Zodiac

Spinel loses out to ruby and garnet in the zodiac realm probably more because of not being correctly identified as a unique gemstone but it is the alternative crystal for Vedic Leo and is an important stone for those born under the signs of Scorpio and Sagittarius.

How to recharge and cleanse Spinel

Spinle is a tough and durable gemstone so any of the usual methods of cleansing and recharging will work just fine and not damage the gemstone in any way - sun, sea, salt, smoke.

Black spinel is often used as a protective gemstone from negative energies so it is important to cleanse and recharge this one quite regularly. Simple run it under some clean water - either the tap or a running stream if you can - then leave in the sun for a while to dry and recharge.

Where to place Spinel

Spinel is thought to be a gemstone of vision, growth and inspiration, giving you the determination to accomplish any task so placing spinel in a room where new projects take place would be a good idea.

Spinel is also a stone of passion and sexual desire so one or two in the bedroom will do no harm.

How to use Spinel

Spinel is a marvelous gemstone so would make some delightful jewelry pieces and this is the best way to keep it near you all day to protect and enhance your day.

Or you can just put one or two in your pocket or purse to reach for in times of need. This would help stimulate the Root Chakra too.

If you feel your chakras are out of alignment, find a quiet spot to relax and place a spinel gemstone on the appropriate location, regulate your breathing and let the spinel get to work healing your body.

Spinel and wealth

Spinel is not what I would call a ‘lucky’ gemstone in the sense it will bring wealth and fortune without any work on your part but, indirectly, it can improve your finances.

It will focus your mind on achieving your goals and give you the confidence to go out and do it. Do the hard work and the wealth will follow.

Can I use Spinel for Meditation and Yoga?

Spinel is a pretty good gemstone for both meditation and yoga. It stimulates higher communication with the inner self, strengthens intuition and balances your emotions.

In addition, the energy and stamina boost that spinel provides will get you through the more strenuous yoga sessions and help heal your body quicker.

Can I wear or carry Spinel every day?

We all have our own energy vibrations and different reactions to individual gemstones. For some certain gemstones can be too powerful to be worn all the time but although Spinel is potent it seems to be a gentle power.

If you feel a little overwhelmed when first wearing spinel it may be that you just need to get used to its particular frequency. Take it off for a day or two and slowly get used to it by wearing every other day for a few hours here and there until you are tuned to its vibration.

Spinel Goddesses

Ruby, garnet and tourmaline nabbed all the goddesses centuries ago so there are no real associations left for spinel.

Can I help my pet with Spinel?

Just as gemstones can help heal us humans, they can also affect our pets in similar ways - so long as we can interpret what they need. Four-legged animals have the same Chakra points as us so can be healed in much the same way.

The grounding energy of Black spinel can provide a bit of physical stability to older pets which may be a little unsteady on their feet. It is also good for muscle aches and pains.

Spinel Elixir

Spinel does contain aluminum which can be poisonous. Causing yourself damage by making a spinel elixir is very unlikely but it may be better to be safe than sorry by putting the gemstones into a water tight container and putting THAT into the water. This method means the spinels can influence the water but never actually touch it.

Making an elixir with the red or black spinel can boost your inner vitality and your stamina so that you may overcome any health related problems.

Put the elixir into tea, into the bath, drink it cool from the fridge or spray it around the home to infuse the whole home with its revitalizing power.

Spinel and Dreams

There is very little information about spinels affecting dreams or how to interpret dreams about spinels.

In general, a dream about gems is usually a good sign for personal and business affairs, since jewels are thought to signify pleasure and riches.

Which gemstones go well with Spinel?

Spinel is a friendly gemstone which will work well with most other crystals.

Those looking for extra protection from negativity can pair it with black tourmaline and if you are fighting depression putting spinel with peridot will work wonders.

Pairing spinel and garnet is a great way to work on your Root Chakra and, it has been said, can activate Kundalini energy.

Spinel and the workplace

It could be said the spinel is the workaholic’s gemstone. It re-vitalizes and re-energizes when your resources are low and inspires you to reach your goals. It boosts confidence levels and makes you feel you can achieve anything you set your mind to but it is also very realistic - not letting wild fantasies take over.

Spinel is helpful for inspiring new ideas and letting you think differently about any situation.

Spinel Pendulums

Pendulums are a great way to reveal your hidden truths and can be great fun. Suspend a crystal from a string or chain and ask a series of yes or no questions to get into your subconscious mind. The movement of the pendulum shows the truth.

The gemstone at the end of the chain needs to be quite large to be able to swing in a way that can easily read since most spinels are quite small this can be a problem. There are a couple of options.

A small spinel attached to a larger crystal of your choice could work. Any type of pendulum held over a spinel on the table or mat is another way of incorporating this gemstone.

Finally, black spinels are available in fairly large sizes at affordable prices so that could be a good way to use this protective stone to help you discover your inner self.

Spinel and EMF

The modern world is full of smart phones, computers, wifi connections and interactive flat screen TVs and, as a result, we are surrounded with harmful electro-magnetic waves.

Gemstones can offer some protection from this invisible smog and one particular spinel is ideal to act as a protective barrier from these potentially dangerous waves, black spinel.

Black is a very shielding color in most gemstones, including spinel. It can absorb energy and prevent the negative waves entering your body.

As a detoxifying gemstone, spinel can also help purge cellular waste and toxins.

Final thoughts on Spinel

The so-called Black Prince’s Ruby, a huge crimson red gemstone which is a centre-piece of the British Crown jewels on display at the Tower of London, guarded night and day by the famous Beefeaters, has been handed down generation after generation for nearly seven centuries.

It has been worn by King Henry VIII and Queen Victoria, survived many wars, fires, theft, bombings and revolutions and is seen at every state opening of parliament in England. The only problem is that it is a spinel not a ruby!

It is not the only famous ‘ruby’ to really be a spinel and that is a shame because this stunning gemstone deserves its place in any crown jewels not only for its beauty but its spiritual potency.
