Larimar

One look at Larimar and you could almost guess that it comes from the Caribbean. It conjures up images of blue skies with wispy white clouds floating by above your head or perhaps the twirls of foam you see as waves of blue water hit the shore.

Larimar Colors

The best Larimar gemstones are either a bright sky blue or perhaps a teal or turquoise color with clean white feathers or swirls contrasting against this azure background.

The presence of copper is the most likely cause of the blue colors.

Larimar Species

Larimar is a variety of the mineral, pectolite, which is a fairly common fibrous crystal. The vast majority of pectolite is far too soft, fragile and poorly colored to be considered as a gemstone but on very rare occasions the right mineral ingredients with the addition of heat, pressure and time can create what has come to be known as Larimar.

Larimar Price

With such an unusual gemstone as Larimar where every example is a totally unique one-off there will always be an element of personal choice when it comes to their price. Whichever Larimar takes your fancy is the most valuable to you.

That being said, bright blue colors are the most popular and fetch the higher prices. Turquoises and teals are well-liked too and clean white wisps and marbling can add value.

Any odd patches of dark color such as black, red or brown will detract from the price unless they create interesting patterns.

Carat Weight

Larimar gemstones can be found in quite large carat weights relatively easily. This will mean that the price will not increase dramatically as the stones get bigger - it is all about the color with Larimar.

Even though it is a rare and beautiful gemstone most examples will be between $2 and $10 per carat.

For more details please refer to our full Larimar Info page here

Treatments

Larimar is not usually treated in any way other than the cut and polishing into the cabochons you see on our web pages.

Where is Larimar found?

Although pectolite can be found around the world it is only the Caribbean island of the Dominican Republic that supplies Larimar gemstones. In addition, it is mined in one tiny location in the hills of the Barahona Province in the remote east of the country

What jewelry is Larimar suitable for?

Larimar is rated at 4.5 - 5 on Mohs hardness scale which means it is quite soft for a gemstone however the large cabochons are certainly strong enough to be used as pendants, necklaces, brooches and earrings. Even rings are an option with protective settings.

The cool colors, reasonable prices and availability in large sizes make it perfect for imaginative and eye-catching pendants.

If you want a gem that you can trust to not be treated, or if it is it’s disclosed this is the place! There’s something for everybody. I really like knowing that the picture of the item is the one I’m buying, not a sample or stock photo. If you make jewelry, buy gems here! You can even buy a gem and have it set by a jeweler. Again, they have an amazing inventory, and prices are more than fair. You won’t be disappointed! I just wish they sold uncut gems. Sometimes I just want a specimen in the crystal form. I’m surprised they had no quartz from Arkansas, but they have a great selection of anything I’ve ever looked for.

Everything was right there - The site provided the exact minerals I was looking for. The search for items filtered easily, with results showing pictures of exactly what I bought, at reasonable prices. It doesn't get any better than this. Well, the shipping charges could have been lower, but they weren't outrageous.

this is my first experience with GemSelect so I can’t really comment on much more than the website & purchasing experience, which was great. there were a few stones I went to look at that didn’t really have descriptions about them (their properties or spiritual benefits for example) like some of the other stones & I thought that was interesting & I wondered why they didn’t. but all in all, the purchasing experience was easeful & I can’t wait to receive my gems & see if the quality is as beautyfull as they seem to be in the pictures.

Size and Weight

Gems are always measured in Millimeter (mm)

Dimensions are given as;
length x width x depth,
except for round stones which are;
diameter x depth

Select gems by size, not by weight!
Gem varieties vary in density, so carat weight is not a good indication of size

Note: 1ct = 0.2g
