Grossularite Garnet

Grossular (or Grossularite) Garnets are a diverse species of garnet which has more color varieties than all other types of garnet. To keep things simple within this complicated species we have separated Grossular Garnet varieties such as tsavorites and hessonites from the greenish yellow Grossular Garnets found on this page.

Grossular Garnet Colors

Grossular Garnet gets its rather unusual name from the botanical term for gooseberries. When you see these luscious yellowy green gemstones you can understand why.

Although the Grossular species of garnet can actually be found in a wide range of colors including the bright green of tsavorites and the cinnamon brown found in hessonites, as far as the gemstone world is concerned, Grossular Garnets are a lemon yellow to greenish yellow color.

See our detailed article on Gemstone Colors here

Grossular Garnet Species

Grossular Garnets are one of 5 different garnet varieties that are commonly of interest to the world of gemstones - almandine, pyrope, spessartite, and andradite are the other four.

Generally Grossular Garnet refers to the greenish yellow gemstone but other colors within the same species have their own trade names, such as:

  • Tsavorite - a valuable bright green version
  • Mali - a blend of grossular and andradite which creates a golden yellow to caramel brown gemstone
  • Merelani Mint - a refreshing pastel green
  • Hessonite - reddish to brownish orange colors
  • Leuco - a colorless variety

What are the spiritual benefits of Grossular Garnet?

Garnets are the 'Stone of Health' and the Grossular variety possesses all the spiritual strengths that contribute to a life of vigor and vitality.

Grossular Garnets also have all the other powers of garnet:

  • Grounding and Security
  • Protection for Travelers
  • Detoxifying and Purifying
  • Improves Sexuality and Fertility

Grossular Garnet and the Chakras

Grossular Garnets are typically a greenish yellow color and as such they can help realign or unblock the Sacral Chakra which deals with willpower, determination and personal responsibility. A gemstone with a much greener tone may be able to help with the Heart Chakra.

Grossular Garnet Price

Most Grossular Garnets have high levels of clarity and an excellent sparkle so the real deciding factor for price is the color. For the sake of simplicity we are only including the yellowish green colors of Grossular Garnet in this instance.

The exact color tone whether it is more yellow or more green is a matter of personal choice but an even color across the stone is always appreciated and a slightly lighter gemstone can show off the fire or sparkle much better than a darker stone.

Larger Grossular Garnets are hard to find so the price per carat can rise significantly for gemstones over 2 carats but the smaller stones will range from $45 - $80 per carat while the gemstones over 2 carats in weight can reach $80 - $300 per carat.

Grossular Garnet Treatments

Grossular Garnets, like most other garnets, are not treated in any way to enhance their appearance.

Grossular Garnet History

Garnets of all types have been an important part of our culture since civilizations began - a necklace of garnet beads was found in a grave dated back 5000 years.

In ancient times garnets were most famously red while the yellow Grossular Garnets could have easily been mixed up with the citrine, topaz and peridots before scientists could properly identify them all.

Where is Grossular Garnet found?

The finest sources of Grossular Garnet are Sri Lanka, Brazil, India, Canada, Madagascar, Myanmar, Tanzania and the US.

What jewelry is Grossular Garnet suitable for?

Grossular Garnets are rated between 6.5 to 7.5 on Mohs hardness scale and can be used in all types of jewelry items.

Birthstones and Anniversaries

Grossular Garnet is an official birthstone of January and could be an ideal gift for anyone who has a birthday in that month.

Grossular Garnet is a traditional gemstone to celebrate the 2nd wedding anniversary.

I love this online site. I can browse and select pieces at my leisure - on my schedule. The gemstones are reasonably priced and appear to be quality for the price.

My significant other told me about gem select, he knows I have a small business in making jewelry. I often use these and experiment with new designs and seeing the wide variety of options really is amazing. I love all of the items I see, but sometimes I want more than one of the selection and there is only one of that type. I understand it takes work to put these together so I am not complaining. I would recommend this sort of thing to my friends that might be interested in making jewelry or to others that are on forums say on reddit or other sites.

Size and Weight

Gems are always measured in Millimeter (mm)

Dimensions are given as;
length x width x depth,
except for round stones which are;
diameter x depth

Select gems by size, not by weight!
Gem varieties vary in density, so carat weight is not a good indication of size
