Diopside is a calcium magnesium silicate with a hardness of 5-6 on the Mohs scale. Diopside is best known for the vivid green chrome diopside, but the black diopside exhbiiting asterism or the star effect is also important. Diopside deposits are found in Burma, India, Madagascar, Sri Lanka, South Africa and the USA.
