Size and Weight
  • Gems are always measured in Millimeter (mm)
Compare mm Size with US coins
  • Dimensions are given as length x width x depth, except for round stones which are diameter x depth
  • Select gems by size, not by weight! Gem varieties vary in density, so carat weight is not a good indication of size
  • Note: 1ct = 0.2g

Treatment

Diffused:
Diffusion treatment involves heating a gemstone with one or more chemicals. Surface diffusion affects mainly the surface of the gem, while lattice diffusion penetrates the crystal lattice. Many star sapphires are diffusion treated with rutile to improve the star. More about treatments
About Andesine Labradorite
Andesine is a member of the plagioclase feldspar group, which also includes labradorite and sunstone. All the members of this group are a mixture of albite and anorthite, with andesine being 50-70% albite and 30-50% anorthite.

Supplies of andesine from the Congo are quite recent, with the mineral found in a range of colors, including red, yellow, champagne and green. It has hardness of 6.5 on the Mohs scale, so it is not ideal for rings.
