- Gems are always measured in Millimeter (mm)
Compare mm Size with US coins
- Dimensions are given as length x width x depth, except for round stones which are diameter x depth
- Select gems by size, not by weight! Gem varieties vary in density, so carat weight is not a good indication of size

About Alexandrite
Alexandrite is one of the rarest of all colored gemstones and is famed for its color change from green in daylight to red under incandescent light. Fine faceted alexandrite over 1 carat is more valuable than sapphire, ruby or emerald.
Alexandrite is a variety of chrysoberyl, with an excellent hardness of 8.5 on the Mohs scale, placing it right behind sapphire and ruby. Alexandrite is rare because of its chemical composition. Chrysoberyl is colored by traces iron and titatnium, but alexandrite is also colored by chromium, which gives it the emerald green hue in daylight.
