Although it is relatively little known, Morganite is part of a very famous family - Beryl - which also includes prestigious Emerald and Aquamarine gemstones.
Pastel colored gemstones are particularly popular at the moment - especially for engagement rings - and the light tones and excellent durability of Morganite make it an ideal option.
Morganite is generally thought to be a pink gemstone but its color can range from very delicate blush colors all the way to a bubblegum pink. In between, we can find lilac, peach, salmon and violet colors but they are all what we would describe as pastel.
The cause of the color is thought to be trace elements of manganese although caesium could also be the reason.
Morganite can change color quite dramatically when turned from one angle to another in a phenomenon known as pleochroism. A skilled craftsman will cut the gemstone so that the Morganite displays its strongest shade of pink from the top.

Pink is certainly the most sought after color in Morganite but gemstones with a violet or salmon or even orange undertone are also appreciated and all a matter of personal preference. The Sale price is usually not much different for the color variations it is more about the morganite cut and size.
It is the color of Morganite that sets the price - assuming it has high standards of clarity and a skilled cut - and they do not get more expensive per carat as they get bigger as some other gemstones can.
The majority of fine Morganite gemstones will fall in the range of between $100 and $250 per carat no matter the carat weight.
