Dumortierite Quartz Gemstone Information

Dumortierite quartz is one of the rarer and more unusual blue varieties of quartz gemstones. It is a gemstone-quality combination of quartz aggregate, intergrown with the mineral known as dumortierite. Although quartz can occur in a wide range of colors, blue colored quartz is surprisingly quite rare. The traces of dumortierite are responsible for its distinct color, which can range from light to dark blue and in some cases reddish-brown.

Dumortierite is an aluminum borosilicate with a hardness that can range from 7.0 to 8.5 on the Mohs scale. In aggregate form, mainly when cut, its hardness is 7.0. (the same as quartz), while crystal forms have a hardness rating of 8.5. The mineral was first described in 1881 and was named after French paleontologist, Eugene Dumortier (1803-1873). Dumortierite also has a few industrial purposes other than jewelry. Since it is known to turn remarkably pure white in color when fired, it is often used for the production of porcelain and ceramics.

Dumortierite quartz is most often found in Brazil, Canada, France, Italy, Madagascar, Mozambique, Namibia, Norway, Poland, Sri Lanka and the USA.

Dumortierite Quartz Color

Dumortierite quartz colors can range from red-brown to violet-blue, and from dark to light blue. Dark blue is the most common color. Color is very often unevenly distributed, exhibiting areas of dark and light blue, similar to lapis lazuli and sodalite. Many stones may also exhibit whitish streaks or spots along with their blue color. Dumortierite mineral impurities within the quartz are responsible for the blue color.

Dumortierite Quartz Clarity and Luster

Dumortierite quartz is quartz aggregate intergrown with inclusions of dumortierite. Almost all stones are opaque in clarity, although some very rare and fine materials may appear slightly translucent. Like most quartz aggregates, dumortierite quartz has a waxy to dull luster.

Dumortierite quartz is typically cut en cabochon. It is commonly shaped into traditional ovals and rounds. Large sizes are common, as well as calibrated sizes. Fancy shapes are rare, but not unheard of.

Note: Buy colored gemstones by size and not by carat weight. Colored stones vary in size-to-weight ratio. Some stones are larger and others are smaller than diamonds by weight in comparison.

Dumortierite quartz does not require much when it comes to care and maintenance. It is considered to be quite hard and very durable. However, other harder substances, such as topaz, diamond or sapphire can easily scratch quartz, so care is required when wearing or mixing different types of gemstones. Dumortierite quartz can easily be cleaned using warm soapy water and a soft cloth or brush. Be sure to rinse well to remove any soapy residue.

As with most gemstones, avoid the use of harsh household chemicals as they can permanently damage the attractive color of your stones. Avoid prolonged exposure to extreme heat since heat can also alter the color of your gemstones. Although dumortierite quartz is quite durable, jewelry should still be removed prior to playing sports, exercising or performing any intense household chores. When storing dumortierite quartz, store it separately from other gemstones. It is suggested that you wrap it in a soft cloth or place it inside a fabric-lined box for added protection.
