Chrysoprase is technically a type of chalcedony which in turn is a variety of quartz.
The quartz mineral can be divided into two types of gemstones - ones with a large crystal structure such as amethyst, citrine and smoky quartz which are usually transparent and ones with a small crystal structure such as agate, jasper and carnelian which tend to be opaque.
