About Chocolate Opal
The chocolate opal is an amazing gem with an interesting story. Opal gemstones were first suspected to exist in Southern Africa since 1939, when anthropologist and archeologist, Louis Leakey, initially discovered opal artifacts in a Kenyan cave during a gathering expedition. Leakey found traces of evidence that opals were once used in the production of hand tools used by Ethiopia's ancient civilization. Later, in 1995, mining engineer, Telahun Yohannes rediscovered the Yita Ridge opal field deposits, located approximately 150 miles northeast of Ethiopia's capital, Addis Ababa. Soon after, chocolate opals were discovered, extracted and shared with the rest of the world.
