Alexandrite is one of the rarest of all colored gemstones and is famed for its color change from green in daylight to red under incandescent light. Fine faceted alexandrite over 1 carat is more valuable than sapphire, ruby or emerald.
Alexandrite is a variety of chrysoberyl, with an excellent hardness of 8.5 on the Mohs scale, placing it right behind sapphire and ruby. Alexandrite is rare because of its chemical composition. Chrysoberyl is colored by traces iron and titanium, but alexandrite is also colored by chromium, which gives it the emerald green hue in daylight.
I have purchased many gems from this company and am always very pleased with the quality of gems and their cuts. Each time I am pleasantly surprised by how quickly I receive them! I will order again and again. Always very happy with them!!
I enjoy this newsletter for the information and descriptions of the gems as well as all the history and myths surrounding the various gems. This newsletter makes me wish I was young so I could study to be a gemologist!
Excellent will be returning to make more purchases! Ordered one sapphire and one tourmaline, both arrived within 3 working days and appeared to be the exact stones shown in both pictures.Smooth transaction and very well set out website, easy to use and informative. Will definately be buying more gems from Gemselect. Gems are a little darker than they appear on the website.
